The 599 GTB is spectacularly fast, even by today’s standards! Zero-100km takes just 3.7 seconds, with the standing quarter blowing by in 11.2 seconds at 131 mph. With the F1 derived Superfast transmission in the fastest setting, just 100 milliseconds elapse between clutch disengaging and fully engaging the next gear.
Stopping the car is another spectacular event! The carbon-ceramic brakes are a wonder, sensitive and progressive from light trail braking to full anti-lock braking, the pedal selects just what your foot desires.
Ferrari also resorts to electronics to balance the tricky equation between sports-car handling and the kind of ride comfort that will allow owners to use their cars as grand tourers. In this case, the 599 uses electromagnetic shocks, their calibration partly controlled by the manettino, a five-position rotary switch on the steering wheel that also governs shift speed and traction- and stability-control settings. This thing rotates willingly under power but can be controlled like a good race car. Turn the manettino on the steering wheel to a more aggressive setting, prod the throttle, and you've found it. Suddenly, you're shoved into the seat, the V-12 wails, and shifts crack off with such violence that you wonder if the drivetrain is going to explode. Stab the brakes or turn a corner, and your face contorts with the g-load.
The 599 utilises an underbody spoiler and venturi tunnels that contribute to downforce. The arched C-pillars in a 'flying buttress' style also aid further in downforce by channelling the air around the rear section thus eliminating the need of a rear wing. The buttresses were initially a styling exercise by exterior designer Jason Castriota. Their aerodynamic effect was proven by Ferrari aerodynamicist Luca Caldirola with the wind tunnel testing. Due to this fact, the 599 generates a claimed 160 kg (353 lb) of downforce at 299 km/h (186 mph). The car also has functional brake cooling ducts on the front and rear body panels for improved brake cooling.
