We present you the second generation of the BMW X5 M, which sets new standards in the performance SUV sector. On paper it has certainly succeeded, with 567bhp from the 4.4L twin turbocharged V8. Perhaps the most staggering figure, though, is the 0-100kms time, which takes just 4.2 seconds - 0.1 of a second faster than the BMW M5 saloon of the same generation. Living up to all those impressive-sounding numbers and it is blisteringly fast.
If you keep your foot down the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission shifts through the gears precisely and rapidly but flick one of the paddles behind the steering wheel and it hands over control instantly and allows you to hold the gears right up to the limiter. You are kept somewhat isolated from the sensation of speed, meaning you really must be travelling at some pace before you get a sense of it, efficient brakes mean you can carry vast amounts of this speed into a corner with confidence. They are of the high-performance compound sort - significantly larger than the previous X5 M's.
Taking us to the inside the rest of the cabin has higher levels of luxury than you might get on lesser versions with the carbon fibre interior trim. Inside expect to find M- Sport seats, leather upholstery, wireless phone charging, wi-fi hotspot preparation, dual-zone climate control and an iDrive infotainment system with DAB, sat nav, a 20GB hard drive and USB interface.
