In recent years, we’ve seen a handful of manufacturers attempt to create a crossover convertible to all-which received a luke warm reception. Nissan built their Murano drop top, and Range Rover are currently pushing out the Evoque convertible. But what about a Mercedes crossover convertible?<\/p>\n
Audi also dipped their toes in this unique\u00a0segment back in 2012 with the Crosslane Coupe concept. With five years flying by and no production version of the model anywhere in sight, that makes two German manufacturers\u00a0ruling\u00a0out the idea.<\/p>\n
Reports have surfaced with Mercedes exterior design director Robert\u00a0Lesnik being questioned about the idea of a Mercedes crossover convertible\u00a0to do battle with Range Rover.<\/p>\n
With a strong lineup of drop top models already, Mercedes do not need to create such a model which would appeal to such a small margin of buyers out there.<\/p>\n
To create an Evoque rival, either the GLE or GLC crossovers would require significant amounts of structural\u00a0changes in order to accommodate a soft folding roof, not to mention additional\u00a0funds.<\/p>\n
If the models were based on coupe platforms rather than SUV’s, the conversion process would be slightly\u00a0easier; but would still make for a tough pill to swallow.<\/p>\n
This leaves the Range Rover Evoque as the single crossover convertible in today’s market. Who\u00a0will stand up next and take them on? Perhaps Toyota could cut the roof off the C-HR. Our maybe Mini could add a soft-top to the Paceman lineup to make it an all British affair.<\/p>\n
