Residents of the UAE’s capital will soon have to pay an Abu Dhabi traffic toll as per a new law issued by His Highness\u00a0Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates.<\/p>\n
While no mention of how much a trip will cost, motorists who cross underneath and do not pay the fee can face fines up to AED 10,000.<\/p>\n
According to the law, ambulances, civil defence vehicles, motorcycles, armed forces and public buses will be exempt from paying the tariff.<\/p>\n
As of writing, there is also no mention of when the Abu Dhabi traffic toll gates will be introduced and where they will be setup is also unknown, although we are aware the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport are authorised to determine where and when the Abu Dhabi traffic toll system will be constructed.<\/p>\n
The law also explains that the department takes responsibility\u00a0for collecting the toll from vehicles. It’s unknown how they will collect the fee.<\/p>\n
Dubai’s Salik (meaning clear and moving) was introduced in 2007 and costs AED 4 for any vehicle passing underneath any of the seven gates set up around the Emirate.<\/p>\n
The system was introduced to ease congestion on busy roads and was designed as a free-flowing system allowing motorists to pay the tariff via an RFID tag which automatically deducts the amount without drivers having to stop their vehicles or pay the toll manually at a toll booth.<\/p>\n
