Plate D5 sold for dhs33 million

Motoring enthusiasts spend millions of dirhams to buy classic, rare, exotic and luxury, but lately, a trend has started in the Middle East – number plates.

In a bid to raise money for developmental projects, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) arranged an event yesterday at JW Marriott Marquis Hotel, where they auctioned 80 number plates. The highlight of the event was the Dubai plate D5, which sold for a whopping Dhs 33 million.

To put that into perspective, that’s the same amount you could use to buy the world’s most expensive car Lamborghini Veneno Roadster.

Surprisingly, you would still have surplus to buy W Motor’s Lykan HyperSport. The winning bidder was Balvinder Sahni, an Indian businessman who wants to attach it to his black Rolls-Royce.

Other Dubai number plates which sold for millions of dirhams include P 27 (sold for Dhs 2.14 million) and Q 77 (auctioned for Dhs 4.52 million).
