Is this the end of the line for the Audi R8?

Now may be the best time to buy an Audi R8 if you happen to be in the market for one, as it appears its production run could come to an end in the not so distant future.

Despite its appealing exterior, agile handling and outstanding performance, during an interview with an online publication, Audi’s research and development boss, Peter Mertens, reportedly confirmed Audi has no plans for a third generation Audi R8.

It remains unknown why exactly there are no plans for a third generation model, although seeing as Audi are focusing heavily on plug-in hybrids, and electric vehicles, the Audi R8 with its V10 engine doesn’t exactly fit the bill when it comes to promoting an eco-friendly lineup.

Mr Mertens also mentioned “Never say never” and also added that performance cars are good for the brand. With that said we won’t get too excited and dream up an Audi R8 hybrid or a fully-electric sports car with a quad ring emblem.  We’ll have to sit tight an wait to see what the company comes up with.

Is there an exact date to mark the end of the Audi R8?

As of writing, there is is no mention of when exactly the German manufacturer plans to discontinue the Audi R8. However, do expect it to stick around for some time as the Rear-Wheel Series is currently in production and there are persistent rumours that an entry-level model on the way with smaller twin-turbo 2.9-litre petrol engine.
