Upcoming Mercedes C-Class and SUVs get more aluminium

Lighter and stronger materials are the way forward in this generation as they don’t just make the vehicles move quicker in a straight line they also provide better safety for all those inside. While some current models in their fleet already use a fair amount of the alloy, with the next generation being ushered in the German manufacturer wants to increase its use.

Current C-Class models utilise a complex bond of aluminium and other materials to make up specific parts of each vehicle which help keep its overall weight down.

The aluminium growth spurt isn’t solely directed at C-Class family as three-pointed star SUV’s currently being pieced in the US are losing the kgs thanks to the alloy being heavily used along with laser welding, riveting and bonding.

So far it’s known that the lightweight alloy will feature prominently in the chassis for both cars and eventually aluminium could trickle its way into body panels and other components of both models.

There are two other reasons why the increased use of aluminium is a good thing, fuel economy improves and emissions are cut down leading to less pollution entering the environment. For the time being it’s unknown if this will drive the base price of these models up or if the practice will be used on other classes within in the German stable.
