Since its 2005 conception, this is the most complete car Porsche makes. So, what has changed for the 718 range? We have ended up with a Cayman range powered almost completely by 4-cylinder turbocharged engines. The badge is new, too. Porsche 718 was the name scribed across a series of mid-engine, flat-four race cars that competed in the late Fifties and early Sixties.

As before, there are several tiers of Cayman ownership, echoed by the 718 Boxster range, which has gone the same 4cyl route. Added to this Cayman 718 S model is the bigger Porsche Carrera S 20” alloy wheels, sports chrono pack, 718 side vents, adjustable rear spoiler & manual sports seats.

Moving up to this 718 S gives you the larger engine of the Cayman S, which use a 2.5-litre 4cylinder turbo with 350-bhp & 420Nm of torque, dipping the 0-100kms sprint down to 4.6 seconds! Moving to the handling, it is superb as ever. Perhaps a touch better, given a turbocharged engine provides more low-down torque, this allowing you to bring the rear axle to life at saner speeds and therefore enjoy the fine work of Porsche’s talented chassis engineers more frequently. Every control is just exceptional, Porsche doing things with electronic steering setups that should not be possible and providing brake pedals you can use with similarly millimetric precision to those in actual race cars. a roof, storage space and proper liveability, too. Porsche always nails the ergonomics of nearly everything it makes, and thus the 718 Cayman’s driving position, visibility, steering wheel size and pedal positions are all nigh on perfect. Nobody does this stuff better.
