Summary

This 1989 Maserati Biturbo Spyder is a rare enthusiast find, representing the pinnacle of the model's evolution with the desirable 2.8-litre fuel-injected engine. Finished in a classic Red that remains a high-demand color for Italian sports cars in the GCC, this low-mileage example offers a unique blend of open-top glamour and genuine performance. As an American spec car from a era of limited production, it stands out for its improved reliability over earlier carbureted versions and its engaging manual transmission. For the GCC collector, this Spyder offers a more exclusive alternative to period German roadsters, provided it is maintained by specialists familiar with its sophisticated twin-turbocharged heart.

This Car vs Other 1989 Biturbos

With just 51,000 km on the odometer, this Spyder has covered significantly less distance than the 20,000 km per year typically seen on GCC roads for a 37-year-old vehicle. While most surviving Biturbos from this era are coupes or higher-mileage sedans, this low-distance Zagato-built convertible is a rarity in the regional market. Its Red exterior is a strong resale choice for classic Maseratis, maintaining higher desirability among local collectors compared to darker or more muted period tones.

SPYDER vs Lower Trims

The Spyder trim features a shortened wheelbase designed by Zagato, offering sharper handling and a more focused driving experience than the standard Biturbo coupe. Unlike earlier 2.0L or 2.5L variants, this 2.8L fuel-injected model provides significantly more torque and smoother power delivery, which is essential for managing heat and stop-start traffic in the GCC. It also benefits from the '90s' aesthetic updates, including larger 15-inch alloy wheels and body-colored bumpers that command a premium over the older, chrome-heavy designs.

Biturbo vs Segment Rivals

In 1989, the Biturbo Spyder competed against the Mercedes-Benz R129 SL and the Porsche 944 Cabriolet. The Maserati leads its rivals in exclusivity and 'Italian Exotica' character, featuring a hand-stitched leather and Alcantara interior that feels far more bespoke than the mass-produced German cabins. While the SL focused on cruising, the Biturbo's twin-turbocharged V6 and rear-wheel-drive manual setup provide a more visceral, enthusiast-oriented drive favored at events like the Dubai Classic Car Show.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.8L twin-turbo averages around 13.1 L/100km, though GCC summer city driving with the A/C at maximum will increase these figures. As a classic Italian performance car, service intervals should be strictly followed every 5,000 to 7,500 km at specialized workshops in the UAE or Riyadh. While American spec cars require attention to cooling system health in our climate, this model's rarity and Zagato pedigree help it retain value better than standard Biturbo sedans, with well-documented examples seeing steady appreciation in the global and local enthusiast markets.

Performance & Capability

The 225 hp twin-turbocharged V6 delivers a top speed of 220 km/h, ensuring it can easily keep pace with modern traffic on the E11 or highway to Abu Dhabi. The 363 Nm of torque arrives early, providing the punchy overtaking capability needed for fast-moving regional highways. This 1989 model features the improved 5-bolt wheel hubs and ventilated front discs, offering better high-speed stability and stopping power than earlier iterations of the platform.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is a masterclass in period luxury, featuring four seats wrapped in hand-stitched leather and accented with genuine walnut wood inlays. The manual folding soft top is straightforward to operate, allowing for open-air driving during the cooler GCC winter months. Despite its compact footprint, the Zagato-designed interior maximizes luxury, and the inclusion of air conditioning is a vital feature that was standard on these export-spec models for the North American market.

Safety

Safety for this 1989 model is period-correct, featuring four-wheel disc brakes with ventilated units at the front to resist fade under spirited driving. The rear-wheel-drive chassis is equipped with a limited-slip differential as standard, providing essential traction on dusty or sandy road surfaces often encountered in the region. Unlike many of its contemporaries, the Biturbo's refined fuel-injection system also offers a higher degree of mechanical reliability and safety compared to the fire-prone carbureted setups of the early 1980s.

The bottom line

This is a rare opportunity to own a low-mileage, Zagato-built Italian icon that has aged into a true collector's piece. For the UAE buyer looking for a distinctive alternative to a classic SL, this well-preserved 2.8L Spyder offers an unmatched sense of occasion and rarity.
