Ford Explorer XLT Family car, 7 seats

Highlights

• 2,267 kg maximum braked towing capacity

• Seven seats with flat-folding third row

Summary

This 2014 Explorer XLT represents a balanced opportunity in the GCC family SUV market, offering a spacious 7-seat configuration that is highly sought after by local residents. Finished in Silver, it carries one of the strongest resale colors for the UAE climate, effectively masking desert dust and reflecting heat better than darker alternatives. The mileage is slightly above the regional average for its age, but as a GCC-spec model, it benefits from the cooling and filtration systems designed for extreme summer temperatures. Compared to rivals, it offers a car-like unibody ride quality without sacrificing the robust 3.5L V6 power needed for long highway commutes between Emirates. For a buyer looking for a dependable American workhorse with a modern cabin, this listing offers proven utility and a high level of standard equipment.

This Car vs Other 2014 Explorers

With 170,000 km, this vehicle has been driven approximately 17,000 km per year, which is slightly higher than the typical 20,000 km annual GCC average but reflects consistent highway use. Unlike many imported American-spec examples in the market, this is a genuine GCC model, ensuring full compatibility with local Ford service centers and cooling systems optimized for 45°C+ summers. The Silver exterior remains a top-tier choice for value retention in the UAE, consistently outperforming niche colors at resale.

XLT vs Lower Trims

The XLT trim provides a significant jump in daily convenience over the base model, adding essential features like rear parking sensors and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It also features upgraded 18-inch aluminum wheels and 6-way power-adjustable front seats, which provide better support for long-distance drives across the GCC. Additionally, the XLT includes heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, a small but practical detail for city driving in dense Dubai or Riyadh traffic.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer leads rivals like the Toyota Prado in on-road refinement thanks to its car-based unibody construction, making it much more comfortable for daily school runs and highway cruising. While the Honda Pilot offers similar seating, the Explorer’s Intelligent 4WD system with the Terrain Management dial provides more intuitive control for weekend excursions to the sand. Its 3.5L V6 also delivers a smooth power band that feels more responsive during high-speed overtaking than many naturally aspirated competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.5L V6 typically averages around 11.5 L/100km, which is efficient for a heavy 7-seater on long highway stretches. Ford has one of the most established service networks in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, ensuring that parts like filters and brake pads are readily available and affordable. The 2014 model has already absorbed its steepest depreciation, making it a stable asset that holds its value well if the documented service history is maintained. Owners should prioritize transmission and PTU fluid changes every 40,000 km to ensure long-term mechanical health in the local climate.

Performance & Capability

The 290 horsepower V6 provides ample grunt for a 2,267 kg braked towing capacity, making it capable of hauling jet skis or small trailers for weekend trips. The All-Wheel Drive system is paired with Ford's Terrain Management System, allowing the driver to shift between Sand, Mud, and Snow modes on the fly. While it is not a dedicated rock crawler, its 193 mm ground clearance and specialized sand mode make it perfectly capable of handling gravel tracks and light desert dunes. On the highway, the 6-speed SelectShift automatic provides smooth transitions, maintaining cabin quietness even at 120 km/h.

Comfort & Cabin

The seven-seat layout is highly versatile, featuring a third row that folds completely flat to create a massive cargo area of over 2,200 litres. Air conditioning is a standout feature, with dedicated rear vents that ensure all three rows stay cool during the peak of the GCC summer. The cabin is well-insulated from road noise, and the SYNC connectivity system allows for easy hands-free calling and media streaming. The XLT's cloth upholstery is often preferred in this region as it stays cooler than leather when the car is parked in the sun.

Safety

Safety is a core strength for this trim, which comes standard with the AdvanceTrac system featuring Roll Stability Control to prevent skids on sandy or wet surfaces. It is equipped with a comprehensive airbag suite, including the Safety Canopy System that provides curtain protection for all three rows of passengers. Standard rear parking sensors help navigate tight mall parking spaces, while the SOS Post-Crash Alert System provides additional peace of mind for family travel across the region.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec Explorer XLT is the ideal choice for a growing family that needs seven seats and modern safety without the premium price tag of a new SUV. It is a mechanically sound workhorse that is perfectly adapted to the unique demands of UAE driving.
