• 0–100 km/h in 5.3 seconds
• Brembo performance braking system with 6-piston front calipers

Summary

This 2018 Subaru WRX STI is a rare find in the GCC market, offering the raw, mechanical connection of a 6-speed manual transmission that is increasingly difficult to source. As a facelifted 2018 model, it benefits from significant upgrades to the suspension and braking systems compared to earlier versions of this generation. The iconic World Rally Blue exterior is the most sought-after color for the STI, ensuring it remains a high-demand vehicle for local enthusiasts and retains its value well. With its legendary symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and rally-bred DNA, this sedan provides a level of driver engagement and high-speed stability that few modern cars can replicate on the UAE's open highways.

This Car vs Other 2018 Imprezas

While 163,000 km is on the higher side of average for a typical sedan of this age, for a performance-oriented STI in the GCC, it indicates a car that has been regularly driven and likely maintained to handle the region's long-distance highway commutes. The 2018 model year is particularly desirable as it introduced the upgraded monoblock Brembo brakes and a revised suspension setup that offers a more refined ride than previous years. The presence of the World Rally Blue paint is a major resale advantage in the local market, where this specific color is considered the hallmark of the STI brand.

WRX-STi STANDARD vs Lower Trims

The STI is a significant mechanical step up from the base WRX, replacing the 2.0L engine with a more powerful 2.5L turbocharged Boxer unit producing 300 hp. This trim specifically adds the Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD), allowing the driver to manually adjust power distribution—a feature essential for enthusiasts. Standard equipment on this trim also includes the signature large rear wing, STI-tuned inverted strut suspension, and 19-inch alloy wheels, which are not available on lower Impreza or standard WRX models.

Impreza vs Segment Rivals

The WRX STI occupies a unique niche in the GCC, competing with the Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3, but offering a much more visceral, analog experience thanks to its manual-only gearbox and hydraulic steering. Its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive provides superior mechanical grip on sandy or rain-slicked surfaces compared to the front-biased systems found in many European rivals. Additionally, the STI’s durability in extreme heat and its widespread community support in the UAE make it a practical choice for a year-round performance daily driver.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.5L STI typically averages around 10.3 L/100km, though this can increase in stop-start city traffic in Dubai or Riyadh. It requires 98-octane Super fuel to maintain peak performance and engine health in the GCC climate. Subaru has a strong authorized service network via distributors like Al Khoory in the UAE, ensuring parts and specialized technical support are readily available. The STI holds its value remarkably well compared to European performance hatches, often retaining a loyal buyer base that stabilizes depreciation at approximately 10-12% annually.

Performance & Capability

With 300 hp and 407 Nm of torque, the STI delivers an explosive mid-range punch that makes highway overtaking effortless. The 0-100 km/h sprint of 5.3 seconds is backed by a top speed of 250 km/h, verified for the GCC specification. The 6-piston Brembo front brakes, new for the 2018 facelift, provide immense stopping power and fade resistance, which is vital during high-temperature summer driving. The SI-DRIVE system allows you to toggle between Intelligent, Sport, and Sport Sharp modes to tailor the throttle response to current traffic conditions.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the STI features high-grip Ultrasuede-trimmed seats with leather bolsters, designed to keep the driver secure during spirited cornering. The 2018 update brought improved cabin insulation and thicker door glass to better shield passengers from the UAE's external heat and road noise. Standard features include a dual-zone automatic climate control system with powerful cooling capacity and a multi-function display that shows boost pressure and performance data. Despite its track-focused nature, it remains a genuine five-seater with a usable 460-liter boot for family trips.

Safety

The 2018 WRX STI comes equipped with a comprehensive safety suite including seven airbags and a reinforced ring-shaped frame for maximum impact protection. Active safety features include a standard Rear-Vision Camera and high-performance ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution. The car's sophisticated Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) with Active Torque Vectoring is particularly useful on GCC roads, helping the driver maintain control during emergency maneuvers or on slippery surfaces near the coast.

The bottom line

For the purist driver in the UAE, this manual 2018 STI represents the final era of raw Subaru performance in a daily-usable sedan package. It is an ideal opportunity for an enthusiast who values mechanical involvement and the proven reliability of a GCC-spec performance icon.
