Toyota Hiace GL

Highlights

• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• Dual front and rear air conditioning standard
• Strong value retention in the GCC used market

Summary

This GCC-spec Toyota Hiace GL represents the definitive choice for high-capacity transport, offering the legendary durability that has made it a staple on UAE roads. As the higher GL trim, it features improved interior materials and better passenger comfort compared to the base panel van models. While the mileage reflects a dedicated life of service, the 2.7L petrol engine is engineered for longevity and remains highly serviceable across the entire region. The white exterior is the most practical choice for the local climate, ensuring excellent heat reflection and maintaining the highest possible resale appeal. For a buyer seeking a reliable workhorse with a proven track record in the Gulf, this Hiace is a strategically sound investment.

This Car vs Other 2018 Hiaces

With 400,000 km, this vehicle has served significantly more than the average GCC annual travel of 25,000 km, yet it remains a viable choice due to Toyota's robust mechanical engineering. In the local market, high-mileage Toyotas are often preferred over lower-mileage rivals because parts are affordable and mechanics in every emirate know them intimately. The white paint is a significant advantage here, as it is the most sought-after color for commercial resale in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim offers a substantial step up from the base DX or standard panel van, introducing moquette fabric seating rather than basic vinyl. It includes essential comfort features for passenger transport, such as dedicated rear air conditioning vents and power door locks that are often absent on entry-level work versions. You also benefit from a more refined exterior look with a chrome-plated radiator grille, making it suitable for hotel or executive staff transport.

Hiace vs Segment Rivals

The Hiace leads the Nissan Urvan and Hyundai H1 primarily in terms of long-term residual value and the sheer density of the service network across the GCC. While the Hyundai H1 offers a more car-like driving position, the Hiace provides a superior vertical cargo and seating space that businesses prioritize. Its 2.7L engine is specifically tuned to handle the high-sulfur fuel and extreme heat cycles typical of Gulf summers better than many European alternatives.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.7L petrol manual typically averages between 12L and 13L/100km in mixed GCC driving conditions. Service intervals are recommended every 5,000 to 10,000 km, with major fluids and cooling system checks being vital every 40,000 km to combat the desert heat. As a Toyota, this model experiences one of the lowest depreciation rates in the commercial segment, often retaining a significant portion of its value even at high mileage markers.

Performance & Capability

The 2.7L four-cylinder engine produces a reliable 149 hp and 241 Nm of torque, delivered through a sturdy 5-speed manual transmission that offers total control under heavy loads. It is designed for steady highway cruising rather than rapid acceleration, with a top speed capped around 160 km/h for safety. The rear-wheel-drive layout and leaf-spring rear suspension ensure the vehicle stays level and stable even when carrying a full capacity of passengers or cargo.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is configured for 9+ passengers with a focus on durability and ease of cleaning, featuring the upgraded GL cloth upholstery. The dual-zone air conditioning system is exceptionally powerful, a necessity for keeping the large cabin volume cool when ambient temperatures exceed 45°C. Front power windows and a multi-function display provide the driver with modern conveniences during long shifts behind the wheel.

Safety

Safety is managed through a reinforced ladder-frame chassis and an integrated front crumple zone designed to protect occupants in a collision. Standard features on this trim include Dual Front Airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Brake Assist (BA) to help manage stops on sandy or uneven surfaces. The inclusion of a door-ajar warning and a high-mount stop lamp ensures visibility and security during frequent passenger boarding.

The bottom line

This Hiace GL is the ideal acquisition for a business or transport provider who values mechanical reliability and high resale liquidity over low odometer readings.
