• Naturally aspirated V8
• Top speed of 220 km/h

Summary

This 1972 Montreal is a rare opportunity for a GCC collector to acquire a Marcello Gandini-designed icon powered by a race-derived 2.6L V8. Finished in Red, a color that historically supports strong resale value in the UAE market, this example shows approximately 99,198 km, which is exceptionally low for a 54-year-old vehicle. Unlike many grand tourers of its era, the Montreal features a dry-sump lubrication system and SPICA fuel injection, technologies taken directly from Alfa Romeo's Tipo 33 racing program. Its European specification is highly desirable for enthusiasts looking for the purest mechanical configuration of this avant-garde coupe. For the serious GCC owner, this represents a stable investment asset that stands out at any regional concours event.

This Car vs Other 1972 Montreals

With a 54-year-old vehicle, this car's 99,198 km mileage represents an average of less than 1,900 km per year, significantly lower than typical classic GT usage in the GCC. While many examples in the region have been converted to electronic injection, this European-spec car maintains its period-correct mechanical profile. The Red exterior is a Tier-1 resale color in the UAE and wider Gulf market, offering better value retention than more niche period colors.

STANDARD vs Lower Trims

The Montreal was produced in a single high-specification 'Standard' trim, effectively serving as Alfa Romeo's flagship supercar of the 1970s. It included premium features that GCC buyers value in classics, such as the ZF five-speed manual gearbox and a limited-slip differential as standard equipment. This trim also standardizes the unique vacuum-operated headlight louvers and NACA hood duct, design elements that define the model's high-end status.

Montreal vs Segment Rivals

Compared to contemporary rivals like the Jaguar E-Type V12 and Porsche 911, the Montreal offers a more exotic, race-bred V8 engine configuration that produces a distinctive high-revving symphony. Its 63-litre fuel tank provides adequate range for inter-emirate highway cruising, while the Bertone-designed bodywork offers a more dramatic presence than the relatively common shapes of its German and British competitors. The inclusion of ventilated disc brakes as standard was also a leading safety feature for the segment in 1972.

Running Costs & Resale

Typical fuel consumption for the 2.6L V8 is approximately 13.7 L/100km on the highway, though city driving in heavy GCC traffic will increase this significantly. Service intervals for the SPICA fuel system are specialized, requiring a technician familiar with Italian mechanical injection, with major specialist support available in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Montreal has seen a strong appreciation trend in the GCC, with values for well-maintained examples frequently outperforming contemporary mass-produced sports cars.

Performance & Capability

The heart of this coupe is the 200 hp V8 which allows for a 0-100 km/h sprint in roughly 7.6 seconds, a highly competitive figure for 1972. It achieves a top speed of 220 km/h, making it a capable long-distance grand tourer on modern UAE highways. The rear-wheel-drive layout and ZF manual transmission provide a mechanical, engaging driving experience that is increasingly rare in the region's current market.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin features a 2+2 seating layout with a focus on the driver's environment, highlighted by a deep-dish steering wheel and a comprehensive instrument cluster. For the GCC climate, the factory ventilation system is supported by the distinctive slats behind the doors, though owners often supplement this with modern air conditioning upgrades for summer use. The interior is characterized by its high-quality Italian switchgear and period-correct materials that offer a sense of theater every time you enter.

Safety

Standard safety features for this 1972 model include servo-assisted ventilated disc brakes at all four corners, providing superior stopping power compared to many period classics. The unitary steel body construction and limited-slip differential offer predictable handling characteristics, which are beneficial when navigating the gravel-strewn shoulders or occasional sand-drifted sections of regional roads.

The bottom line

For the GCC enthusiast seeking a blend of 1970s Italian drama and race-derived engineering, this low-mileage Montreal is a blue-chip collectible that is ready to be the centerpiece of any serious collection.
