Wilhelm Maybach began creating the most luxurious automobiles as early as 1910. The brand always remained a niche, locally focused player, producing only a small number of cars. In 1960, Mercedes-Benz acquired the rights to the Maybach name. After that, the brand lay dormant in Mercedes-Benz’s “vault” for nearly 40 years, until a decision was made in 1997 to revive it. The plan was to introduce an ultra-luxury limousine to the market. The target audience consisted of customers who had “outgrown” the S-Class and were ready to move up to the level of Bentley or Rolls-Royce.
Ultimately, the model range consisted of just two vehicles — the Maybach 57 and the Maybach 62. Mercedes-Benz also noticed the growing demand for coupés. Bentley had achieved success with the Brooklands, while Rolls-Royce had no trouble selling the Phantom Coupé. These two brands were taking advantage of favorable market conditions — something that, as Stuttgart soon realized, could not be said for Maybach. Sales fell short of expectations. Nevertheless, a coupé was still meant to appear.
The tuning company Xenatec was also nurturing the idea of building a coupé based on the Maybach 57. The quality of Xenatec’s work proved to be so high that both companies decided to join forces. The plan was to produce no more than 100 Maybach 57S Xenatec Coupés, but production ultimately stopped after just 8 examples.
In the base specification, the 57S was equipped with a more powerful engine — 612 hp instead of 550 hp.
The car is finished in Baltic Black with an Alaska White interior. The paintwork and other elements are in very good condition. The body is in excellent shape. Despite its imposing size and weight, the doors and hood close effortlessly and with a reassuring sense of quality. The interior is flawless and crafted exclusively from the finest materials. The white Alaska White upholstery contrasts beautifully with the black exterior. The dashboard is trimmed in black-and-white leather, while the center console is adorned with carbon-fiber inserts.
As befits a top-tier luxury automobile, this Maybach offers every conceivable comfort. These include, among many others, air suspension, a navigation system, a Bose sound system, telephones in both the front and rear, double glazing, a power-operated trunk, and electrically adjustable, heated, ventilated, memory seats.
One detail deserves special mention: three gauges mounted in the center of the headliner display the time, speed, and outside temperature for the rear passengers.
The Maybach 57S is powered by a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine producing 612 hp and 1,000 Nm of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Despite its substantial dimensions and weight, the car is impressively dynamic — accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5 seconds — while maintaining the highest possible level of comfort.
In the end, we are presented with an exceptionally rare super coupé in magnificent condition and with outstanding provenance.
