Mercedes Benz GLS500 STANDARD

Highlights

• 0–100 km/h in 5.3 seconds
• 700 Nm of torque
• 100-litre fuel tank

Summary

This 10-year-old GLS500 represents the flagship of the Mercedes-Benz SUV lineup, often referred to as the S-Class of SUVs. With a powerful 4.7L BiTurbo V8, it offers a level of effortless highway performance that four-cylinder rivals simply cannot match. This specific listing is finished in black, which remains one of the strongest resale colors in the GCC market for large luxury vehicles. For the family buyer, the true three-row seating and GCC-spec climate control system ensure every passenger stays comfortable during the peak summer months. It is an ideal choice for those who need high-capacity luxury without moving to a full-size American SUV.

This Car vs Other 2016 GLS500s

With 148,000 km on the odometer, this vehicle has averaged approximately 14,800 km per year, which is significantly below the typical GCC annual average of 20,000 to 25,000 km. In a market where high-mileage highway driving is standard, this lower-than-average usage makes it a compelling mechanical prospect. The black exterior is a high-demand choice in the region, ensuring it holds its presence and resale appeal better than more niche colors.

STANDARD vs Lower Trims

The GLS500 sits substantially above the GLS400, replacing the V6 with a 4.7L V8 that provides an additional 122 horsepower. This trim typically includes the Airmatic air suspension system as standard, allowing for adjustable ride height and superior damping on uneven surfaces. Inside, it adds significant luxury features such as ventilated front seats and a 360-degree camera system that are often optional on lower-displacement models.

GLS500 vs Segment Rivals

The GLS500 is frequently cross-shopped against the BMW X7 and the Range Rover. It leads the segment in terms of third-row usability, providing adult-sized legroom that is often cramped in rivals. Furthermore, its 100-litre fuel tank provides a superior cruising range for long-distance desert highway trips compared to many competitors with smaller tanks.

Running Costs & Resale

The 4.7L V8 is surprisingly efficient on the highway thanks to the 9G-TRONIC transmission, though city driving in stop-start traffic will see higher consumption. Being a GCC-spec vehicle, it benefits from a wide and highly professional authorized service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. While European luxury SUVs depreciate faster than Japanese alternatives, the GLS500 maintains a loyal following in the secondary market due to its reputation for long-distance comfort and prestigious badging.

Performance & Capability

Despite its 2.5-tonne curb weight, the GLS500 reaches 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds, providing sports-car-like acceleration for merging and overtaking on fast-moving UAE highways. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and Airmatic suspension allow for a maximum ground clearance of approximately 262mm, making it capable of handling light off-road trails and sandy weekend escapes. It also boasts a substantial 3,500 kg braked towing capacity, ideal for jet skis or trailers.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed to transport seven adults in comfort, featuring a power-folding third row that can be tucked away at the touch of a button to reveal 1,350 litres of space. Dual or quad-zone climate control ensures the air conditioning remains effective even in 45°C heat, with dedicated vents for the rear passengers. Acoustic glass and high-grade insulation keep the interior remarkably quiet, shielding occupants from wind and road noise during long inter-city drives.

Safety

The 2016 GLS500 comes equipped with a comprehensive safety suite including nine airbags and the Pre-Safe system which prepares the cabin for a collision. GCC drivers will particularly benefit from the Crosswind Assist, which keeps the high-sided SUV stable during the gusty winds common on open desert roads. It also includes Attention Assist to monitor driver fatigue during long trips and a 360-degree camera for confident parking in tight urban spaces.

The bottom line

For the executive or family buyer who requires the prestige of a Mercedes-Benz flagship with the practicality of seven seats, this lower-mileage GCC-spec GLS500 is a standout opportunity in today's market.
