Toyota Hilux GLS

Highlights

• 2,500 kg braked towing capacity
• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• Strong value retention in the GCC used market

Summary

This 2021 Hilux GLS represents a highly practical choice for the GCC market, combining Toyota's legendary durability with the refined mid-tier GLS specification. In a region where white vehicles command the highest resale values due to their heat-reflecting properties, this example is positioned perfectly for future value retention. The 2.7-litre petrol engine is a preferred workhorse across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, valued for its mechanical simplicity and ease of maintenance compared to complex diesel alternatives. With average annual mileage for its age, this pickup offers a reliable platform for both commercial duty and weekend lifestyle use. The inclusion of a four-wheel-drive system ensures it remains capable across sandy terrain and construction sites alike.

This Car vs Other 2021 Hiluxs

With 100,000 km on the odometer, this Hilux has been driven approximately 25,000 km per year, which aligns perfectly with the average highway-heavy usage patterns found in the GCC. While many utility vehicles in this segment are subjected to extreme industrial wear, the GLS trim often indicates a more dual-purpose life, potentially seeing better cabin preservation. The white exterior is the gold standard for the local market, ensuring the best possible liquidity and price stability when you decide to upgrade.

GLS vs Lower Trims

Stepping up to the GLS trim adds essential comfort and aesthetic upgrades over the base GL and GLX work versions. You benefit from a more refined interior finish, including an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, which is a major convenience for long drives between emirates. Additionally, the GLS typically includes alloy wheels and improved lighting signatures, moving the vehicle away from a basic fleet appearance toward a more personal, lifestyle-oriented look.

Hilux vs Segment Rivals

The Hilux competes directly with the Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi L200, leading the segment in terms of sheer brand equity and spare parts availability in remote GCC areas. While the Navara may offer a slightly softer coil-sprung ride, the Hilux’s leaf-spring rear suspension is specifically engineered for superior payload stability under the high-temperature conditions of the Arabian Peninsula. Its 2.7-litre engine is widely regarded by local mechanics as the most straightforward powertrain to service from Kuwait to Oman.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.7-litre petrol engine typically averages around 10.9L/100km, providing a predictable cost profile for high-mileage users. Maintenance is exceptionally convenient with authorized service centers located in almost every major city across the UAE and KSA, and service intervals are typically set at 10,000 km. Historically, the Hilux is one of the slowest-depreciating vehicles in the Middle East, often retaining significantly more value after three years than its American or European counterparts.

Performance & Capability

The 164 hp petrol engine is paired with a robust four-wheel-drive system and a 6-speed automatic transmission, optimized for reliability rather than outright speed. It features a verified braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg, making it suitable for hauling equipment or leisure trailers. The high ground clearance and generous approach angles allow it to navigate desert tracks and gravel roads with confidence, a core requirement for weekend adventures in the UAE's northern emirates.

Comfort & Cabin

The double-cab configuration comfortably seats five adults, featuring a layout that balances utility with modern SUV-like ergonomics. The air conditioning system is specifically tuned for the GCC's extreme summer heat, ensuring rapid cabin cooling even after being parked in direct sunlight. Rear passengers benefit from a dedicated cabin environment that feels significantly more insulated from road and engine noise than base-model iterations.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on this trim includes essential systems such as Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), which is vital for maintaining traction on sandy or oil-slicked highway surfaces. The vehicle is also equipped with front airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system, providing peace of mind during long-distance cross-border drives.

The bottom line

For the buyer who needs a dependable, GCC-spec workhorse that won't lose its value overnight, this Hilux GLS is the sensible choice. It offers the right balance of modern cabin tech and bulletproof mechanicals for the region's unique driving demands.
