Summary

This 2022 BMW X4 M40i strikes the ideal balance for a GCC buyer, offering serious performance in the most desirable resale color for the region. As an M Performance model, it fills the gap between the standard crossover and the full-M track car, making it perfectly suited for high-speed highway commutes and urban driving. The 64,000 km mileage is consistent with typical GCC annual use, indicating a car that has been driven regularly across the Emirates rather than sitting idle in the heat. With its aggressive coupe-like silhouette and all-wheel-drive stability, it stands out against more traditional boxy SUVs. For the local buyer, this spec offers the prestige of the M badge alongside the reliability of BMW's most celebrated modern straight-six powertrain.

This Car vs Other 2022 X4s

With 64,000 km on the odometer, this X4 falls within the average range for a two-year-old vehicle in the GCC, where 25,000 km per year is the standard for highway-heavy driving. The black exterior is a high-demand resale color in markets like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, ensuring better value retention than more niche shades. Compared to others on the market, this GCC-spec example avoids the warranty and cooling concerns often associated with imported American or European models.

M40i vs Lower Trims

Stepping up to the M40i from the xDrive30i replaces the 4-cylinder engine with a significantly more powerful 3.0L inline-six, a favorite for its smooth power delivery on GCC highways. This trim adds essential local upgrades including Adaptive M Suspension for improved ride quality over uneven surfaces and the M Sport Differential for better traction. You also get the upgraded M Aerodynamics package and larger 12.3-inch infotainment screens that were optional on lower variants.

X4 vs Segment Rivals

The X4 M40i competes directly with the Mercedes-Benz GLC 43 AMG Coupe and the Porsche Macan S. It leads the segment in terms of balanced daily usability, offering a more intuitive iDrive infotainment system than its rivals and a larger standard digital display for the 2022 model year. While the Porsche is more track-focused, the BMW provides a more compliant ride and better rear-seat cooling, which is vital for family trips during the Middle Eastern summer.

Running Costs & Resale

The M40i's inline-six engine typically sees a combined fuel consumption of approximately 9.5 L/100km, though stop-start traffic in cities like Riyadh or Dubai may increase this. BMW's authorized service network is extensive across all major GCC cities, with service intervals generally every 12,000 km or as indicated by the Condition Based Service system. Historically, GCC-spec X4s retain roughly 65-70% of their value after three years, outperforming many American-spec luxury crossovers in the local used market.

Performance & Capability

The heart of this vehicle is the 360 hp turbocharged engine that enables a 4.9-second sprint to 100 km/h, providing effortless overtaking power on the E11. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system is rear-biased for a sporty feel but provides necessary stability during occasional rain or on sand-dusted coastal roads. With a top speed of 250 km/h and multiple drive modes including Sport+, it transitions from a comfortable commuter to a focused performance machine at the touch of a button.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, you'll find an M-specific cockpit featuring sport seats with heavy bolstering and an M leather steering wheel. The climate control system is engineered for the region, featuring powerful multi-zone cooling and dedicated rear vents to keep all five passengers comfortable in 45°C temperatures. The 2022 refresh brought a larger 12.3-inch central display, which remains crisp even in direct desert sunlight, paired with a premium audio system for long-distance cruising.

Safety

Standard safety tech for this GCC-spec M40i includes Active Blind Spot Detection and Lane Departure Warning, which are essential for navigating fast-moving multi-lane highways. The 360-degree camera and parking sensors make the coupe-like body easy to maneuver in tight mall parking structures. Standard frontal collision mitigation and multiple airbags provide a high level of protection for all occupants.

The bottom line

This M40i is the perfect choice for a professional looking for a fast, GCC-ready crossover that maintains a strong resale profile thanks to its spec and popular color.
