Summary

This 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 4MATIC represents a balanced choice for the GCC market, offering the prestige of the flagship S-Class SUV with the efficiency of a mild-hybrid 6-cylinder engine. The grey exterior is a highly resilient choice for local resale, effectively masking desert dust while maintaining a professional executive appearance. With 80,000 km, this vehicle has been driven at a typical regional average, suggesting it has spent much of its life on the UAE's well-maintained highway network rather than in stop-start city congestion. As a GCC-spec model, it features the cooling capacity and regional warranty eligibility that local buyers prioritize. This model is widely regarded as the segment leader for ride quality, thanks to its standard air suspension that smooths out both high-speed highway ripples and rougher gravel paths.

This Car vs Other 2022 GLS 450s

At 80,000 km, this GLS is positioned right at the average for a three-year-old luxury vehicle in the GCC, where annual distances of 25,000 km are common. The grey metallic finish is one of the most sought-after colors in the UAE and Saudi markets, providing a significant advantage in future trade-in value compared to less traditional shades. Being a GCC-spec example ensures it has the appropriate radiator and air conditioning specifications required to handle 45°C+ summer peaks without compromise.

4MATIC vs Lower Trims

The GLS 450 4MATIC sits as the sophisticated entry to the flagship range, providing the MBUX digital cockpit and AIRMATIC suspension that are often optional on smaller SUVs like the GLE. It upgrades the driving experience with a 48V mild-hybrid system (EQ Boost) which provides smoother stop-start transitions and an extra burst of torque that lower-tier 4-cylinder engines lack. This trim also standardizes the 360° camera system and 4-zone climate control, both of which are essential for navigating and cooling a large 7-seat cabin in the Gulf.

GLS 450 vs Segment Rivals

The GLS 450 leads rivals like the BMW X7 and Lexus LX in terms of pure third-row passenger comfort, offering a more natural seating position for adults. Its 90-litre fuel tank provides a superior cruising range for long cross-border drives between Emirates or to Oman, requiring fewer stops than the smaller tanks found in some European competitors. Furthermore, the MBUX infotainment system remains the benchmark for voice-command accuracy and ease of use while driving at highway speeds.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the inline-six mild hybrid typically averages around 11.2 L/100km on the highway, though GCC city traffic can see this rise to roughly 14.7 L/100km. Service intervals are strictly set at 15,000 km, and Mercedes-Benz maintains a massive authorized service footprint across the UAE, KSA, and Kuwait, ensuring parts are always readily available. Historically, the GLS 450 retains approximately 55-60% of its value after three years in the GCC, outperforming many niche luxury SUVs due to its high demand as a primary family vehicle.

Performance & Capability

The turbocharged 3.0L engine delivers a refined 362 hp, enabling a 0–100 km/h sprint of 6.2 seconds, which is exceptionally quick for a full-sized 7-seater. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system works in tandem with selectable drive modes to provide stability on wind-blown sandy highways and wet surfaces alike. With a braked towing capacity of 3,493 kg, it is also highly capable of hauling boats or trailers for weekend trips to the coast.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the GLS 450 features a genuine 7-seat layout with a power-folding third row and dedicated climate vents for every passenger. The cabin is heavily insulated with acoustic glass, significantly reducing the wind noise typical of desert highway driving. Standard features include ventilated front seats and the dual 12.3-inch MBUX widescreen display, creating a lounge-like environment that remains cool and quiet even during the peak of summer.

Safety

Safety is comprehensive with the Driving Assistance Package Plus, which includes Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC for maintaining gaps in fast-moving traffic and Active Blind Spot Assist. The vehicle is equipped with a full suite of airbags including side curtains for all three rows and Pre-Safe impulse side protection. The 360-degree camera system is particularly helpful in the GCC for parking this large SUV in tight mall spaces or navigating through narrow residential streets.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec GLS 450 is the ideal choice for a buyer seeking S-Class luxury in a practical 7-seat format, offering a resale-friendly color and a proven powertrain perfectly suited for the region.
