Summary

This 2023 Kia Sonet EX is a highly efficient choice for city commuters and small families across the GCC. With a black exterior that maintains strong resale appeal and mileage consistent with modern regional highway use, it offers a refined crossover experience in a compact footprint. As the EX trim, it bridges the gap between value and luxury, providing essential features like remote engine start and cruise control that make a difference in our local climate. The Sonet stands out for its high ground clearance and class-leading efficiency, making it a low-stress ownership proposition for those who frequent both busy city streets and high-speed motorways between emirates.

This Car vs Other 2023 Sonets

With 75,000 km on the odometer, this Sonet has seen slightly higher than average use compared to the typical 20,000 km per year GCC benchmark, suggesting a life spent largely on efficient highway runs. The black paintwork remains a top-tier choice for resale value in the UAE and Saudi markets. Given its age and the region's heavy reliance on air conditioning, its well-maintained status and GCC-specific cooling systems provide a significant edge over grey-market imports.

EX vs Lower Trims

The EX trim adds several high-value features over the base LX, most notably the remote engine start which allows you to pre-cool the cabin before entering—a necessity during GCC summers. It also upgrades to 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails for a more rugged profile, and cruise control for easier long-distance travel. Inside, you benefit from a sliding center armrest and extra steering wheel controls that aren't standard on the entry-level models.

Sonet vs Segment Rivals

The Sonet competes primarily with the Hyundai Venue and Suzuki Brezza, leading the group with its superior ground clearance of 205 mm for handling speed humps and light sand. Its 1.5L Smartstream engine is optimized for better fuel efficiency than many rivals, offering a manufacturer-claimed 17.5 km/L. Additionally, its 392-litre boot space provides more vertical loading room than the Venue, making it more practical for grocery runs and weekend trips.

Running Costs & Resale

Running costs for the Sonet are among the lowest in the crossover segment, with real-world fuel consumption averaging 5.7 to 6.2 L/100km on the highway. Kia’s authorized service network is extensive across the UAE, KSA, and Oman, typically following 10,000 km service intervals that are very affordable. The Sonet retains value well in the GCC, generally depreciating by only 10-12% annually, significantly outperforming many European compact rivals.

Performance & Capability

The 1.5-litre 4-cylinder engine produces a reliable 115 hp, paired with a smooth CVT designed for efficiency rather than raw speed. It manages the 0-100 km/h sprint in approximately 12 seconds, which is adequate for navigating city traffic and merging onto fast-moving highways like E11. With 205 mm of ground clearance, it is remarkably capable at handling unpaved parking areas and gravel tracks common in developing suburban GCC communities.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed to stay cool under pressure, featuring dedicated rear AC vents to ensure all five passengers remain comfortable during peak summer heat. An 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto comes standard, keeping you connected without messy cables. The EX trim's interior feels durable yet modern, with a mix of fabric and artificial leather designed to withstand the high-intensity sunlight of the region.

Safety

Standard safety for this trim includes dual front airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which is particularly useful in multi-level parking garages. It also features a high-definition rearview camera and rear parking sensors to make tight city parking safer. The inclusion of a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is a vital safety check for long desert highway drives where heat can affect tire integrity.

The bottom line

For a buyer looking for a modern, fuel-efficient crossover that is easy to park and affordable to run, this Sonet EX is a smart, tech-forward choice that holds its value better than almost anything else in its class.
