Summary

This 2024 GAC Empow GL is a standout in the compact sedan market, offering a striking balance of sports-car aesthetics and everyday efficiency. With mileage reflecting typical GCC highway use, it remains a mechanically sound and visually sharp choice for those wanting to step away from traditional Japanese alternatives. The unique Green paint finish is a signature for the model, holding surprisingly good niche appeal in the local used market compared to standard shades. Its turbocharged engine and dual-clutch transmission provide a more engaging drive than its rivals, making it ideal for the fast-paced traffic of Dubai or Riyadh. As a late-model GCC spec sedan, it offers modern tech and cooling capabilities essential for long-term ownership in the region.

This Car vs Other 2024 Empows

With approximately 59,838 km, this unit has seen typical annual usage for the GCC, where highway-heavy commuting between emirates is standard. It presents as a well-driven example that has likely benefited from consistent high-speed cooling, which is often preferable to cars that sit idle in city traffic. The Green exterior is the model's most recognizable color, providing a resale advantage for buyers looking for the definitive Empow look.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim offers a substantial technology upgrade over the base GS, most notably adding the 360-degree camera system which is invaluable for tight parking in regional shopping malls. It also steps up to a larger 10.25-inch infotainment display with integrated smartphone connectivity and a digital instrument cluster. Unlike the entry-level models, the GL provides a more premium cabin environment with enhanced safety features, including additional airbags and driver assistance sensors.

Empow vs Segment Rivals

The Empow competes directly with the Honda Civic and MG GT, leading the segment with a torque-rich 270 Nm that offers better mid-range punch for highway overtaking. While the Civic focuses on maturity, the GAC provides a more aggressive 'sport-sedan' feel with its dual-clutch transmission and quad-exhaust styling. Its 480-liter boot space ensures it remains a practical choice for families, rivaling the storage capacity of more established brands.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel economy is excellent, averaging around 17.5 km/L on the highway, though this will settle to approximately 13 km/L in GCC stop-start summer traffic with the AC at full power. Authorized service centers are well-established across the UAE and KSA via major distributors like Gargash and Aljomaih, ensuring parts availability. While Chinese brands typically depreciate faster than Japanese icons, the Empow has shown stronger value retention within the 3-year mark due to high demand for its specific styling.

Performance & Capability

Powered by a 1.5L turbocharged engine producing 170 hp, the Empow achieves a verified 0-100 km/h time of 7.0 seconds, making it one of the quickest sedans in its price bracket. The 7-speed dual-clutch transmission is tuned for rapid shifts on the move, providing a sporty character during highway drives. Multiple drive modes allow you to soften the response for heavy traffic or sharpen the steering for more spirited weekend drives.

Comfort & Cabin

The five-seater cabin is designed with a cockpit-like feel, featuring high-back sports seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel that reinforce its performance intent. For the GCC climate, the air conditioning system is robust, featuring rear vents to ensure passenger comfort during peak summer months. Acoustic insulation is surprisingly good for the segment, keeping the cabin quiet during high-speed cruises on the E11 or other major regional motorways.

Safety

The GL trim is equipped with a comprehensive safety suite including six airbags and a 360-degree camera system for total visibility. Standard stability and traction control systems are essential for managing the turbo power on sandy or dusty road surfaces common in the region. It also includes blind-spot monitoring and rear parking sensors, providing critical assistance during fast-paced lane changes on multi-lane GCC highways.

The bottom line

This Empow is perfect for the young professional or small family seeking a high-tech, sporty sedan that looks twice its price point. It represents a smart opportunity to own a 2024 model that is already proven on GCC roads and still carries the visual impact of a new car.
