Every automobile owes its existence to one remarkable invention—the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. First developed by Karl Benz in 1885 and patented in 1886, it is widely recognised as the world’s first practical automobile powered by an internal combustion engine, marking the beginning of a revolution that transformed transportation forever.

Its place in history was secured in 1888 when Bertha Benz undertook the world’s first long-distance automobile journey, travelling over 100 kilometres to demonstrate the practicality of her husband’s invention. Her remarkable journey not only proved the Motorwagen’s capabilities but also laid the foundations for the future of the motor car, making it one of the most significant milestones in automotive history.

To commemorate the centenary of this extraordinary achievement, John Bentley Engineering of the United Kingdom produced a strictly limited series of just 100 faithful recreations in 1986. Renowned for their exceptional craftsmanship and historical accuracy, these recreations have found homes in prestigious museums and private collections around the world.

This example is one of those coveted 100 recreations and has remained a static display piece throughout its life. Beautifully preserved, with its leather, timber and metal finishes presenting in outstanding condition, it offers collectors a rare opportunity to own a faithful representation of the machine that changed the world. More than a conversation piece, it is a tribute to the origins of the automobile and an extraordinary addition to any significant collection.
