Chevrolet Corvette STANDARD

Highlights

• Naturally aspirated V8 with Cross-Fire Injection
• Final model year of the iconic C3 generation
• 91-litre fuel tank standard

Summary

This 1982 Chevrolet Corvette represents the final and most technologically advanced chapter of the legendary C3 'Shark' generation. Finished in a classic Red that remains a high-demand choice for GCC collectors, it features the then-revolutionary Cross-Fire Injection V8 and a refined four-speed overdrive transmission. With a mileage of 88,000 km, this example has been driven significantly less than the typical 20,000 km annual average seen in the region, preserving its mechanical integrity. It offers a unique bridge between classic muscle car styling and modern fuel delivery systems, making it a reliable choice for weekend drives between the Emirates. For the regional buyer, this is a rare opportunity to secure a high-spec, numbers-matching cruiser from the peak of the C3 era.

This Car vs Other 1982 Corvettes

While many C3 Corvettes in the GCC have accumulated high mileage on long desert highways, this unit's 88,000 km translates to roughly 2,000 km per year, marking it as a low-use survivor. The Red exterior is a preferred resale color in the local market, holding value better than more period-specific earth tones. As an American spec car, it retains its original high-output L83 configuration, which provides a more authentic performance profile for collectors.

STANDARD vs Lower Trims

By 1982, the Corvette was essentially a single-trim offering with high standard equipment to reflect its position as a premium grand tourer. This model includes the four-speed 700R4 automatic transmission with overdrive, which was a significant upgrade for highway cruising efficiency over the three-speed units of earlier years. It also features standard power windows, air conditioning, and a tilt-telescopic steering wheel, amenities that are essential for maintaining comfort during the warmer GCC months.

Corvette vs Segment Rivals

Compared to contemporary rivals like the Porsche 928 or the Datsun 280ZX, the Corvette offers a larger 91-litre fuel tank, providing superior range for cross-border trips between the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Its 5.7L V8 provides a characteristic American torque curve that European competitors of the era struggle to match at lower RPMs. Furthermore, the fiberglass body construction ensures long-term resistance to the humidity and sea-air corrosion common in coastal cities like Dubai and Muscat.

Running Costs & Resale

The Cross-Fire Injection system was designed to improve fuel economy, achieving roughly 12.4 L/100km on the highway, though GCC stop-start traffic will see figures closer to 18 L/100km. Parts availability is strong in the UAE due to a dedicated community of classic American car specialists and shared components with Chevrolet's truck line. While European classics can depreciate sharply if not maintained, well-kept final-year C3 Corvettes have shown stable value retention of approximately 5–8% annually, as they are increasingly sought after by regional collectors.

Performance & Capability

Powered by the 200 hp L83 V8, this Corvette offers a refined 0–100 km/h sprint in approximately 8.4 seconds, prioritizing smooth power delivery for highway overtaking. The addition of a locking torque converter in the new-for-1982 transmission makes it a surprisingly capable long-distance cruiser, maintaining low engine speeds at the UAE's 140 km/h highway limits. The C3 chassis remains relatively simple to service, with a robust independent rear suspension that handles the transition from smooth tarmac to gravel road easily.

Comfort & Cabin

The two-seat cockpit is designed with a driver-centric layout, featuring deeply bolstered seats that remain comfortable during extended drives to Fujairah or Jebel Jais. The air conditioning system is notably powerful for the era, a hallmark of American sports cars that is vital for surviving a GCC summer. The t-top roof panels offer the flexibility of open-air driving during the cooler winter months while providing a secure, insulated cabin when the temperatures rise.

Safety

Safety features for this era include a reinforced steel perimeter frame and an energy-absorbing steering column. Standard disc brakes on all four wheels provide reliable stopping power, a critical feature for navigating fast-moving multi-lane highways. The 1982 model also benefited from improved interior padding and standard three-point seatbelts, offering a higher level of protection than many earlier 1970s classics.

The bottom line

This 1982 Corvette is the ideal entry point for a GCC collector seeking the iconic 'Shark' silhouette with the added reliability of fuel injection and overdrive. It represents a well-preserved piece of automotive history that is ready for both the show circuit and regular weekend cruising.
