• 421 hp from a 2.0L hand-built engine
• Top speed of 270 km/h

Summary

This 6-year-old Mercedes-AMG A45 S represents the high-water mark for performance hatchbacks, featuring the world's most powerful production four-cylinder engine. As a top-tier S model, it avoids the entry-level trade-offs of the standard A45, offering significantly more power and a raised top speed as standard. The European specification remains highly sought after by GCC enthusiasts for its uncompromised performance delivery and high equipment levels. While the mileage reflects active use, these M139 engines are engineered for durability, and the vehicle’s grey finish is a top-tier choice for resale value in the UAE market. For a buyer looking to dominate the left lane, this is a supercar-slaying daily driver that holds its own against much more expensive machinery.

This Car vs Other 2020 A45s

With 111,000 km over 6 years, this vehicle sits slightly below the typical GCC annual average of 20,000–25,000 km, making it a well-utilized but reasonably driven example. In a market where high-performance hatchbacks often see aggressive track use, a documented European spec car like this is a strong alternative to local GCC units. The grey exterior is a resilient and high-demand color in the region, ensuring better value retention than louder, niche colors.

AMG- S vs Lower Trims

The AMG S trim is a significant leap over the base A45, increasing output from 387 hp to 421 hp and unlocking the 270 km/h top speed. Key upgrades include the advanced 4MATIC+ system with a dedicated Drift Mode and AMG Torque Control for superior cornering. It also features larger 360mm front brakes with red six-piston calipers and the AMG Real Performance Sound system, which are essential for the high-speed highway driving common in the GCC.

A45 vs Segment Rivals

The A45 S leads rivals like the Audi RS3 and BMW M2 in pure horsepower from a 2.0L displacement, offering a sharper and more aggressive driving character. While the RS3 relies on its five-cylinder charisma, the Mercedes provides a more high-tech cabin with the MBUX dual 10.25-inch screen setup as standard. Its 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system is widely regarded as one of the most sophisticated in the compact segment, providing exceptional grip on sand-dusted road surfaces.

Running Costs & Resale

Expect real-world fuel consumption of approximately 8.3 to 8.9 L/100km, though this will increase in stop-start Dubai or Riyadh traffic. Mercedes-AMG has an extensive authorized service network across the UAE and KSA, ensuring parts and expert technicians are always accessible. While European luxury performance cars typically see 12-18% annual depreciation in the GCC, the 'S' models maintain a cult following that keeps demand high. Regular 15,000 km or annual service intervals are standard for the M139 engine.

Performance & Capability

The 3.9-second 0-100 km/h sprint puts this hatchback in league with dedicated sports cars, making highway overtaking effortless. The hand-built 2.0L turbocharged engine delivers a massive 500 Nm of torque, ensuring immediate response even in high summer temperatures. The 8-speed dual-clutch transmission is tuned for rapid-fire shifts, and the variable all-wheel drive ensures stability during fast transitions between Emirate borders.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, you are greeted by AMG Performance seats and 64-color ambient lighting, creating a premium environment that far exceeds standard compact cars. The dual-zone Thermotronic climate control is highly effective at cooling the cabin quickly, a necessity for the GCC climate. Despite its performance focus, the five-door layout and 370-liter boot make it a practical choice for daily errands or city commuting.

Safety

This model carries a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating and is equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver aids. Standard features include Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and Active Lane Keeping Assist, which are particularly valuable for navigating the fast-moving, multi-lane highways of the UAE. The 4MATIC+ system also provides an inherent safety advantage on wet or gravel-strewn surfaces.

The bottom line

This is the ideal choice for the enthusiast who wants the pinnacle of the hot-hatch era; it offers supercar performance in a practical, grey-painted package that is perfectly suited for the UAE's high-speed roads.
