Summary

This GCC-spec M40i represents the sweet spot for the X4, offering a massive performance jump over the base four-cylinder models without the harshness of a full 'M' car. The Sophisto Grey exterior is a highly desirable shade in the UAE market, striking a balance between executive presence and heat-reflective practicality for strong resale. With its 97,000 km mileage, this car has transitioned past its steepest depreciation curve, making it a savvy buy for someone seeking the B58 engine's legendary reliability. In the GCC, the X4 stands out for those who prioritize the 'Sport Activity Coupe' silhouette over pure cargo volume, and this particular example is a robust choice for inter-city highway commuting.

This Car vs Other 2021 X4s

At 97,000 km, this vehicle sits at an average mileage for a three-year-old car in the GCC, where 25,000–30,000 km per year is standard due to long highway commutes between Emirates. The Grey finish is one of the top three resale colors in the region, ensuring it remains easier to trade or sell compared to niche colors. Being a GCC-spec model, it features the necessary cooling upgrades and dust filtration required to maintain long-term mechanical health in the Middle East.

M40I vs Lower Trims

Stepping up to the M40i replaces the standard 2.0L four-cylinder with the world-class B58 inline-six engine, providing an extra 112 horsepower. This trim also adds the M Sport differential, Adaptive M suspension, and upgraded M Sport brakes as standard, which are vital for stability during high-speed highway driving. Inside, the M40i typically includes the Harman Kardon surround sound system and the Live Cockpit Professional digital display, features often missing or optional on the xDrive30i.

X4 vs Segment Rivals

The X4 is most frequently cross-shopped with the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and the Porsche Macan. While the Mercedes focuses on a softer interior aesthetic, the BMW leads with a more driver-centric chassis and the smoothest powertrain in the class. Its iDrive system remains the most intuitive for use in GCC traffic, and its standard xDrive all-wheel-drive system provides superior traction on the sandy, wind-blown highways common in the region.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption averages around 9.5 L/100km, which is efficient for a 360 hp vehicle during long-distance drives from Dubai to Abu Dhabi or Muscat. BMW has a massive authorized service network via AGMC and Al Masaood in the UAE, as well as Naghi Motors in Saudi Arabia, ensuring parts are always accessible. While luxury European SUVs generally depreciate by 15–18% annually in the GCC, the M40i's engine reputation helps it hold value better than the entry-level trims.

Performance & Capability

The headline figure is the 4.8-second 0–100 km/h sprint, which allows for effortless overtaking on fast-moving UAE highways. The 500 Nm of torque is available from just 1,900 RPM, giving you immediate response in stop-start city traffic. Though designed for the road, the 204 mm ground clearance is more than enough to handle gravel tracks and light desert sand on the way to a weekend camping spot.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is a 5-seater layout optimized for front-seat comfort with M-specific bolstered seats that provide excellent support during long drives. Standard GCC-spec climate control is exceptionally powerful, featuring dedicated rear vents to ensure all passengers remain cool during summer peaks exceeding 45°C. High-quality acoustic glazing helps isolate the cabin from the wind noise typically associated with high-speed desert driving.

Safety

The 2021 M40i comes standard with a comprehensive ADAS suite, including Active Blind Spot Detection and Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation. For GCC drivers, the Lane Departure Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are particularly valuable given the fast-moving and multi-lane nature of local highways. The car is equipped with a full array of front, side, and curtain airbags, maintaining a high safety standard for family use.

The bottom line

For the buyer who wants M-Performance thrills with a GCC-hardened service history, this Grey X4 M40i is a high-spec, high-value opportunity in the current pre-owned market.
