Summary

This 2021 Toyota FJ Cruiser GXR is a standout opportunity in the GCC market, combining legendary durability with the improved technology of the later production years. With a white exterior—the region's most sought-after color for resale—and mileage that sits well below the typical 25,000 km annual average for regional SUVs, this unit offers significant long-term value. As a GXR trim, it features the larger dual-tank system, making it an ideal companion for cross-border road trips and remote desert expeditions without frequent fuel stops. The FJ Cruiser has transitioned into a modern classic in the Middle East, maintaining exceptional price stability due to its discontinued status and bulletproof mechanical reputation. For a buyer seeking a rugged 4x4 that handles extreme summer heat and off-road terrain with ease, this is one of the most reliable investments available today.

This Car vs Other 2021 FJ Cruisers

With 76,233 km on the odometer, this FJ Cruiser has averaged roughly 19,000 km per year, which is notably lower than the typical 20,000–25,000 km GCC average for this segment. Its white exterior is the strongest resale color in the regional market, offering better heat reflection and easier maintenance. This specific model year benefits from the final production refinements, ensuring all interior and mechanical components are at their most developed stage.

GXR vs Lower Trims

The GXR trim provides the essential 'dual-tank' configuration (159 litres total), whereas base trims often carry only the 72-litre single tank. It also adds critical off-road hardware like the rear differential lock and Crawl Control as standard, alongside cabin upgrades such as the 12.3-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and a built-in air compressor for tire pressure management after desert drives.

FJ Cruiser vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Jeep Wrangler or Nissan Xterra, the FJ Cruiser leads in resale value retention and ease of maintenance across the GCC. Its massive 159-litre fuel capacity offers a significant range advantage for long desert crossings where rivals may require external jerry cans. Additionally, the body-on-frame Toyota platform shares many components with the Land Cruiser Prado, ensuring superior parts availability in every corner of the region.

Running Costs & Resale

The 4.0L V6 engine typically returns a combined fuel consumption of 12.4 L/100km, performing efficiently on long GCC highway stretches. Toyota’s extensive authorized service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman ensures that maintenance is affordable and accessible, with 10,000 km service intervals. Historically, the FJ Cruiser holds 85-90% of its value over three years in the local market, making it one of the slowest-depreciating vehicles in the region.

Performance & Capability

The robust 4.0L V6 produces 270 hp and 381 Nm of torque, providing plenty of low-end grunt for soft sand and steep dunes. It features a 245 mm ground clearance and a part-time 4WD system with a low-range transfer case, specifically tuned for the demanding conditions of the Arabian desert. On the highway, the 5-speed automatic transmission offers a stable, planted feel, suitable for the high-speed transit common between emirates.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for durability and ease of use, featuring water-resistant fabric seats and high-performance air conditioning that remains effective even in 45°C+ summer heat. The GXR trim includes a leather-trimmed steering wheel and an upgraded audio system with 8 speakers. The unique suicide-style rear doors provide a wide opening for loading gear, while the 12-inch display ensures modern connectivity for daily city driving.

Safety

Standard safety features on this GXR trim include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Active Traction Control (A-TRC), and a rear-view camera integrated into the infotainment screen. The vehicle is equipped with dual front airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchors, along with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) which is vital for monitoring heat-related pressure changes on long desert drives. Its sturdy ladder-frame construction provides a high degree of passive protection compared to monocoque crossovers.

The bottom line

This FJ Cruiser is the perfect choice for an enthusiast or family looking for a dependable, high-resale 4x4 that is as comfortable on a Dubai highway as it is in the Liwa dunes.
