Toyota Hilux GLX

Highlights

• 2,500 kg braked towing capacity
• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• Strong value retention in the GCC used market

Summary

This 2021 Hilux GLX is a premier example of why the model remains the GCC's definitive workhorse, combining a relatively low 43,000 km odometer reading with the region's preferred white exterior for maximum resale strength. While many pickups in this segment are stripped-back fleet vehicles, the GLX trim adds necessary refinements like an 8-inch touchscreen and alloy wheels that make it a viable daily driver beyond the construction site. The 2.7L petrol engine is the specific choice for owners prioritizing long-term mechanical simplicity and ease of maintenance across the Emirates. For a buyer in the Gulf, the combination of four-wheel drive and Toyota's legendary cooling system ensures this truck handles 50°C summer commutes and weekend desert excursions with equal composure. It stands out as a high-utility asset that holds its value significantly better than its American or European counterparts.

This Car vs Other 2021 Hiluxs

With just 43,000 km on the clock, this Hilux has averaged approximately 14,000 km per year, which is significantly below the typical GCC annual average of 20,000 to 25,000 km. The white exterior is the most sought-after color in the local market, offering the best heat reflection and the highest resale liquidity. Compared to many 2021 models that have spent three years in heavy commercial service, this example shows the benefit of lighter, more careful use.

GLX vs Lower Trims

The GLX trim provides a substantial equipment upgrade over the base GL, moving away from steel wheels to 17-inch alloys and adding a more refined interior finish. Most notably for GCC drivers, this trim features the updated 8-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a critical convenience for modern navigation and connectivity. It also includes upgraded safety tech like Vehicle Stability Control and Hill-Start Assist that are often absent on basic fleet-spec variants.

Hilux vs Segment Rivals

When compared to rivals like the Mitsubishi L200 or the Isuzu D-Max, the Hilux leads primarily in its vast service network and parts availability, ensuring minimal downtime even in remote desert areas. While some competitors might offer more torque, the Hilux's 2.7L engine is renowned for its durability and resistance to the extreme heat common in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Its resale value at the three-year mark consistently outperforms the Nissan Navara and Ford Ranger in the local market.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.7L petrol engine is tuned for the region's 91 or 95 octane fuel and typically sees real-world consumption of around 10.8 L/100km in combined GCC driving conditions. Service intervals are standardized at 10,000 km across the extensive Al Futtaim or Abdullah Hashim networks, with routine maintenance being among the most affordable in the pickup segment. The Hilux boasts one of the lowest annual depreciation rates in the Gulf, making it a safe financial harbor for both individuals and small business owners.

Performance & Capability

Equipped with a selectable four-wheel-drive system and a 2,500 kg braked towing capacity, this truck is purpose-built for heavy-duty tasks and off-road utility. The 164 hp engine provides reliable power for highway overtaking even when the bed is loaded, supported by a 6-speed automatic transmission that manages heat better than manual equivalents in heavy city traffic. A 700 mm wading depth and generous ground clearance ensure it can navigate sand dunes and unpaved site roads with high confidence.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the five-seat double cab layout is designed for utility but doesn't ignore the needs of a GCC summer, featuring a high-output air conditioning system that is famous for its rapid cooling. The cabin uses hard-wearing fabrics and plastics designed to resist UV damage and dust ingress, while the new digital combination meter provides clear info for the driver. Long-distance comfort is aided by improved suspension bushings introduced in the 2021 facelift, reducing the 'bouncy' feel typical of unladen pickups.

Safety

Safety is anchored by a comprehensive suite including driver and passenger airbags, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). This GCC-spec GLX also comes standard with Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRC), which are vital for maintaining grip on shifting sand and during sudden maneuvers on high-speed highways. A tire pressure monitoring system is also standard to ensure safety during long desert crossings.

The bottom line

For the buyer seeking the ultimate balance of low mileage, high resale potential, and verified GCC reliability, this 2021 GLX is the most sensible investment in the mid-size pickup market today.
