Toyota Hilux GLX GLS

Highlights

• 2,500 kg braked towing capacity
• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• Low-range transfer case with locking differentials

Summary

This 2021 Toyota Hilux GLX is a prime example of the region's favorite workhorse, offering a mid-range mileage of 62,000 km that is notably lower than the typical 25,000 km annual average for GCC pickups. Finished in black, a strong choice for resale value in the local market, this 4WD double cab bridges the gap between a rugged utility vehicle and a comfortable family hauler. The 2.7L petrol engine is widely preferred by GCC owners for its simple maintenance and ability to handle the extreme summer heat without the complexity of diesel systems. With its robust four-wheel-drive system and automatic gearbox, it provides a dependable ownership experience for those navigating both fast-moving UAE highways and weekend desert excursions.

This Car vs Other 2021 Hiluxes

With only 62,000 km on the odometer, this Hilux has been driven significantly less than the 75,000–90,000 km typically expected for a three-year-old vehicle in the GCC. The black exterior is a sophisticated alternative to the common fleet-white, providing a more premium look that maintains excellent demand in the secondary market. This specific combination of low mileage and the sought-after GLX trim makes it a highly competitive option against higher-mileage alternatives.

GLX vs Lower Trims

The GLX trim provides a substantial comfort upgrade over the base GL 'Workmate' models, featuring essential lifestyle additions like a touchscreen infotainment system with a rearview camera and parking sensors. Unlike lower commercial-spec trims that often use steel wheels and basic fabric, the GLX adds 17-inch alloy wheels and an improved interior finish with a 4.2-inch multi-information display. These features are specifically valued by GCC buyers who use their trucks for daily commuting rather than just job-site logistics.

Hilux vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Mitsubishi L200 and Isuzu D-Max, the Hilux leads with the most extensive service and parts network across every GCC nation, ensuring long-term peace of mind. While rivals may offer slightly different engine outputs, the Hilux's reputation for air-conditioning performance in 45°C+ heat remains a deciding factor for local buyers. Its 80-litre fuel tank also provides superior highway range for long-distance travel between emirates compared to smaller-capacity competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.7L petrol engine averages roughly 10.7L/100km, which is efficient for a 4WD pickup in stop-start city traffic. Service intervals are recommended every 10,000 km or 6 months at any authorized Toyota center, which are plentiful throughout the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. Historically, the Hilux boasts the highest value retention in its segment, typically losing only 8-10% annually, making it one of the safest automotive investments in the GCC.

Performance & Capability

The 164 hp engine is paired with a selectable 4WD system featuring a dedicated low-range transfer case, allowing for genuine off-road performance in soft sand. With a braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg, it is fully capable of hauling boat trailers or jet skis for weekend activities. The body-on-frame construction ensures that the vehicle handles heavy payloads and rough terrain without compromising structural integrity over years of use.

Comfort & Cabin

Designed for the Gulf climate, the cabin features high-output air conditioning with dedicated rear vents to keep all five passengers cool during the peak of summer. The double-cab layout offers generous legroom for a pickup, while the GLX-specific upholstery provides a more durable yet comfortable environment for long drives. Noise insulation has been improved in this generation, making it surprisingly quiet during high-speed highway cruising at 120 km/h.

Safety

This Hilux is equipped with a robust safety suite including Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and Hill-Start Assist, which are vital for maintaining control on loose sand or wet roads. The GLX trim also includes a rearview camera and front/rear parking sensors as standard, providing much-needed visibility when maneuvering in tight urban parking spaces.

The bottom line

This Hilux is the ideal choice for a buyer who needs legendary Toyota reliability and 4x4 capability without the high mileage often found on used work trucks. It offers the perfect balance of utility for the week and comfort for the weekend in a GCC-spec package that holds its value better than almost anything else on the road.
