Mazda CX-5 GL

Highlights

• i-Activ All-Wheel Drive standard
• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• Strong value retention in the GCC used market

Summary

This 2022 crossover stands out in the GCC market as a balance of Japanese reliability and premium driving dynamics. With the GL trim's all-wheel-drive system, it handles the daily high-speed highway commutes between emirates with far more composure than front-wheel-drive rivals. The Soul Red Crystal paint is a high-demand finish that significantly boosts resale potential in local markets compared to neutral shades. Having covered an average of 26,250 km per year, this vehicle aligns closely with typical GCC usage patterns for family commuters. For long-term ownership in the region, the combination of a proven 2.5L naturally aspirated engine and Mazda's extensive service presence across the UAE and KSA makes this a low-risk, high-reward choice.

This Car vs Other 2022 CX-5s

At 105,000 km, this vehicle’s mileage is standard for a 4-year-old family SUV in the GCC, where annual averages frequently reach 25,000 km due to highway-heavy driving. The Red exterior is a signature color for this model and remains one of the fastest-selling shades in the secondary market. As a GCC-spec vehicle, it retains full compatibility with local service centers and features the cooling systems necessary for the region's heat.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim provides a significant upgrade over entry-level versions by including Mazda’s intelligent all-wheel-drive system as standard, offering better stability on sandy or rain-slicked roads. It also adds premium touches like a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear selector, along with a larger 10.25-inch center display. These features are highly prioritized by local buyers during resale, ensuring the car feels modern and stays competitive in the used market.

CX-5 vs Segment Rivals

While rivals like the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V focus strictly on utility, the CX-5 leads the segment in cabin refinement and steering precision. Its 2.5L Skyactiv-G engine is favored in the GCC for its lack of complex turbochargers, providing reliable performance in extreme summer temperatures. The use of a traditional six-speed automatic rather than a CVT transmission makes it a preferred choice for drivers who frequent fast-moving multi-lane highways.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.5L AWD powertrain typically averages between 8.5 and 9.5 L/100km, which is efficient for a non-hybrid crossover during long-distance GCC cruises. Service intervals are generally every 10,000 km, and Mazda’s vast authorized network ensures parts are readily available from Dubai to Riyadh. Historically, this model experiences a low 8-10% annual depreciation rate, making it one of the most stable investments in its class.

Performance & Capability

The 188 hp engine provides linear power delivery that is ideal for smooth overtaking on the E11 or E311 highways. Equipped with i-Activ AWD, the system monitors road conditions 200 times per second to distribute torque, ensuring traction on loose gravel or during sudden winter downpours. The car's G-Vectoring Control Plus technology further enhances comfort by minimizing body roll, a feature your passengers will appreciate during long trips across borders.

Comfort & Cabin

The five-seat layout is designed with high-quality materials and acoustic glass that significantly reduces wind noise at highway speeds. For the GCC climate, the powerful air conditioning system includes rear vents to ensure all passengers remain cool during peak summer months. The human-centric dashboard design puts all controls within easy reach, while the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats provide versatile cargo space for family weekend getaways.

Safety

Standard safety features on this trim include a suite of airbags and i-Activsense technologies like Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which are essential for navigating busy urban traffic. The vehicle is built with high-tensile steel for a rigid safety cell, contributing to its consistently high safety ratings. Adaptive LED headlights ensure maximum visibility on unlit desert roads, adjusting automatically to provide the best possible view without blinding oncoming drivers.

The bottom line

For the GCC buyer seeking a stylish, reliable, and well-maintained crossover, this GCC-spec CX-5 GL offers the perfect balance of premium features and proven durability.
