Toyota Hilux GR SPORT GL

Highlights

• 80-litre fuel tank capacity
• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• Strong value retention in the GCC used market

Summary

This 2022 Toyota Hilux GR Sport offers a rare combination of the sporty GR aesthetic paired with the reliable and efficient 2.7L petrol engine. With mileage at just 43,150 km, it sits well below the typical GCC annual average, making it an excellent long-term prospect for a new owner. The white exterior is the most sought-after color in the region, providing superior heat reflection and ensuring the highest possible resale value. While many GR Sport models in the market carry the larger V6, this 4-cylinder variant is the smarter choice for those who balance weekend desert trips with daily urban commuting. It delivers the rugged presence of a performance truck without the heavy fuel overhead or maintenance complexity of larger powertrains.

This Car vs Other 2022 Hiluxes

With just over 43,000 km on the odometer, this Hilux has been driven significantly less than the average 2022 model in the GCC, which typically covers 50,000 to 60,000 km by this stage. The white paintwork is a strategic choice for the UAE climate, as it maintains its finish better under intense UV exposure than darker shades. This specific unit represents a balanced middle ground between basic workhorses and high-consumption performance variants.

GR SPORT vs Lower Trims

The GR Sport trim transforms the Hilux from a standard pickup into a lifestyle vehicle with exclusive styling cues including the signature honeycomb grille with 'TOYOTA' lettering and sport-tuned suspension. Inside, you receive a more premium cabin environment with GR-branded headrests, a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, and unique red stitching that isn't available on the GLX or Adventure trims. It also standardizes the 8-inch infotainment system with smartphone integration, which remains a key demand for GCC buyers.

Hilux vs Segment Rivals

The Hilux competes directly with the Mitsubishi L200 and Nissan Navara, but consistently leads the segment in terms of residual value and ease of maintenance across the border. Its 80-litre fuel tank provides a greater touring range for long desert highway stretches compared to some compact rivals. While competitors often focus on softer road manners, the Hilux retains a heavy-duty leaf-spring rear setup that is better suited for the high-payload demands and rugged terrain found in the region.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.7L petrol engine is a legendary workhorse in the GCC, known for its ability to run on standard fuel grades and endure extreme heat without cooling issues. Service intervals are typically set at 10,000 km or 6 months, and with Toyota’s massive service network spanning from Abu Dhabi to Muscat, parts are available in almost every town. This model enjoys some of the lowest depreciation rates in the UAE market, often retaining over 75% of its value after three years of ownership.

Performance & Capability

Equipped with a selectable Four Wheel Drive system and a 6-speed automatic transmission, this Hilux is ready for both soft sand dunes and highway cruising. The 2.7L engine produces a reliable 164 hp, offering enough torque for moderate towing and heavy bed loads without the fuel consumption of the V6. The GR Sport's upgraded monotube shock absorbers provide better dampening on corrugated gravel tracks, ensuring a more stable ride during weekend excursions.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed to withstand the GCC summer, featuring a high-output air conditioning system that is widely regarded as the best in its class. Five passengers fit comfortably in the Double Cab layout, which includes rear ventilation to ensure all occupants stay cool during long drives. The interior materials are chosen for durability, using a mix of premium GR Sport accents and hard-wearing plastics that don't degrade in high-heat environments.

Safety

This Hilux comes standard with essential safety features including Vehicle Stability Control, Hill-start Assist, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. The dual front airbags and a driver’s knee airbag provide critical protection, while the reinforced body-on-frame construction offers superior passive safety during off-road activities. The inclusion of a rear-view camera makes maneuvering this large pickup significantly easier in tight city parking spots.

The bottom line

For the buyer who wants the aggressive Dakar-inspired looks of a GR Sport but prioritizes the low running costs and reliability of the 2.7L engine, this low-mileage GCC spec Hilux is a rare and sensible find.
