Summary

This 2023 Kia Sonet EX is a standout choice for those seeking a modern crossover with manageable mileage for its age in the GCC. The black exterior is a high-demand resale color in the region, ensuring better value retention when it's time to upgrade. As the mid-high EX trim, it bridges the gap between essential utility and premium tech, offering a more polished cabin than the base models. Its fuel-efficient 1.5L engine is perfectly suited for the stop-start traffic of Dubai or Riyadh, while the high ground clearance handles urban speed bumps and gravel tracks with ease. For a buyer wanting a reliable, stylish, and economical daily driver that holds its own on the highway, this Sonet is a prime candidate.

This Car vs Other 2023 Sonets

With 68,000 km on the odometer, this vehicle has been driven approximately 34,000 km per year, which is slightly above the GCC average of 25,000 km but typical for commuters traversing between emirates. This mileage is well within the mechanical limits of Kia’s robust 1.5L powertrain, which is designed for high-heat durability. The black paint remains one of the safest bets for resale across the UAE and Saudi markets, consistently outperforming niche colors.

EX vs Lower Trims

The EX trim adds several features that GCC buyers value, most notably the upgraded LED daytime running lights and 16-inch alloy wheels that provide a more premium stance than the LX. Inside, the EX typically introduces a larger 8-inch touchscreen with wireless smartphone integration and a rearview camera as standard. You also benefit from remote engine start, a critical feature for pre-cooling the cabin during the intense GCC summer months.

Sonet vs Segment Rivals

The Sonet competes directly with the Nissan Magnite and Toyota Raize, leading the group with a more sophisticated interior design and a smoother CVT transmission. Its 392-liter boot space is among the most practical in the sub-compact category, making it more capable for small family grocery runs than its narrower rivals. While competitors focus on outright budget, the Kia offers a more 'big car' feel through its cabin insulation and damping.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 1.5L engine averages a highly competitive 5.7 to 6.2 L/100km, making it one of the most affordable crossovers to run in the region. Kia’s service network is one of the strongest in the GCC, with authorized centers easily accessible from Kuwait to Oman. While European rivals may depreciate by up to 18% annually, the Sonet typically holds closer to the 10-12% mark, benefiting from Kia's growing reputation for long-term reliability.

Performance & Capability

The 115 hp output is tuned for efficiency, but the 144 Nm of torque provides enough pep for confident city merging. A generous 205 mm ground clearance is a genuine advantage in the GCC, protecting the underbody during occasional excursions onto unpaved sand lots or over high curbs. On the highway, the Sonet remains stable at 120 km/h, offering a composed ride that belies its compact dimensions.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed to maximize space for five passengers, featuring dedicated rear AC vents—a non-negotiable for the local climate. High-quality fabric seats stay cooler in the sun than leather, while the effective climate control system is engineered to handle 45°C+ temperatures. The layout is intuitive, placing the infotainment screen within easy reach for navigation during long cross-country drives.

Safety

Standard safety for the EX trim includes dual front airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and ABS with Brake Assist to manage sudden stops in fast-moving highway traffic. It also features Hill-start Assist Control, which is particularly useful in multi-story parking structures. The inclusion of a rear-view camera and parking sensors as standard makes navigating tight urban spaces significantly safer.

The bottom line

This Sonet EX is the perfect match for a young professional or a small family looking for a fuel-efficient, GCC-ready crossover that doesn't compromise on modern tech. It offers the ideal balance of a high-spec featureset and proven reliability in the local used market.
