Summary

This 2023 Mazda CX-5 GL represents a refined and balanced choice for GCC drivers who prioritize handling and interior quality. With the reliable 2.5-litre Skyactiv-G engine and standard all-wheel drive, it delivers a more engaging driving experience than many of its soft-sprung rivals. Its Blue exterior is a smart choice for the local market, offering a sophisticated look that maintains strong appeal at resale. As a GCC-spec model, it is fully equipped to handle high summer temperatures with a robust air conditioning system and regional-specific cooling. For the driver who wants a compact SUV that feels more premium than its price tag suggests, this is a standout listing.

This Car vs Other 2023 CX-5s

With just under 78,000 km, this vehicle's mileage is consistent with typical GCC annual usage patterns, where long-distance commuting is common. The Blue exterior is a highly desirable alternative to standard white or silver, often commanding quicker interest in the pre-owned market. Being a GCC-spec vehicle, it avoids the insurance and warranty complications often found with North American or European imports.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim provides a significant technology boost over base models, typically including the larger 10.25-inch infotainment display and standard i-Activ All-Wheel Drive. It bridges the gap between basic utility and luxury by offering enhanced cabin materials and advanced connectivity like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For GCC buyers, this trim ensures all the essential modern safety and convenience features are present without the higher maintenance costs of the turbocharged models.

CX-5 vs Segment Rivals

The Mazda CX-5 leads the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V when it comes to interior refinement and driving dynamics, using a traditional 6-speed automatic rather than a CVT for a more responsive feel. While rivals may offer slightly more raw cargo volume, the Mazda's Skyactiv-G engine is widely regarded for its long-term reliability in extreme desert heat. Its G-Vectoring Control Plus system provides superior stability on winding highway ramps and during sudden maneuvers compared to others in its class.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.5L AWD powertrain averages approximately 7.2 L/100km on the highway, though this can reach 10-11 L/100km in heavy stop-start Dubai or Riyadh traffic. Mazda enjoys a strong reputation for reliability in the GCC, with an extensive authorized service network through distributors like Galadari in the UAE. Historically, the CX-5 retains about 70-75% of its value after three years, making it one of the more stable investments in the compact crossover segment.

Performance & Capability

The 2.5-litre engine produces 188 hp, allowing for a steady 0-100 km/h sprint in approximately 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 190 km/h. The i-Activ AWD system proactively monitors road conditions and grip levels, making it particularly capable during the occasional GCC rainstorm or when navigating gravel tracks leading to weekend campsites. With 193mm of ground clearance, it easily handles high speed bumps and uneven urban terrain found across the region.

Comfort & Cabin

The 5-seat cabin is designed with a driver-centric layout that uses premium soft-touch materials, distinguishing it from the hard plastics common in the segment. The dual-zone automatic climate control is specifically calibrated for the GCC, ensuring rapid cabin cooling even after the car has been parked in direct sunlight. Rear passengers benefit from dedicated air vents, and the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats allow for versatile cargo configurations for family road trips between emirates.

Safety

Safety is a primary strength of the 2023 CX-5, featuring a suite of standard technologies including Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which are invaluable for fast-moving multi-lane highway driving. The i-Activsense suite includes Smart Brake Support and Lane Departure Warning, providing an extra layer of protection during long desert drives. With 6 airbags and a reinforced high-tensile steel body, it remains one of the highest-rated vehicles in its class for occupant protection.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec 2023 CX-5 GL is the ideal choice for a professional or small family looking for a reliable, premium-feeling SUV that stands out from the typical rental-fleet options. Its combination of AWD stability and Mazda’s famous reliability makes it a secure purchase for long-term ownership in the region.
