Fiat 131

Introduction

The Fiat 131, introduced in 1974, was a compact family sedan that replaced the Fiat 124. It was offered in multiple body styles, including a two-door, four-door, and station wagon, making it versatile for different markets. Known as the Mirafiori after Fiat’s Turin factory, the 131 gained international success. It was also the basis for the legendary 131 Abarth rally car, which brought Fiat significant motorsport victories in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Exterior

The Fiat 131 featured a boxy, angular design typical of the 1970s. With straight lines, large glass areas, and simple detailing, it emphasized practicality over flair. Chrome bumpers and rectangular headlights were standard in early models, while later versions received plastic bumpers and updated grilles for a modernized look. The 131 Abarth added flared arches, spoilers, and sporty styling, giving it a more aggressive road presence.

Interior

Inside, the 131 was straightforward and functional, with seating for five and a simple dashboard layout. For its era, the Fiat 131 incorporated standard safety equipment such as seatbelts, a rigid steel structure, and crumple zones. Later versions included improved braking systems and reinforced side impact protection. Though basic by modern standards, these features made the 131 competitive in its class. However, rust was a recurring issue, especially in early models. Motorsport versions like the 131 Abarth required specialist care but remain highly collectible today. The Fiat 131 competed with the Ford Cortina, Opel Ascona, and Renault 18. Ford focused on mass-market appeal, Opel emphasized German engineering, and Renault offered French comfort. Fiat distinguished the 131 with its versatility, strong global reach, and rally success, giving it both everyday credibility and motorsport pedigree.
