As V8's successfully made their way into the Mercedes-Benz saloon range, it was soon becoming clear that the older ‘Pagoda' SL was due for a performance-oriented revamp. The new generation, internally known as the 107, sported more muscular lines and benefited from the marque's precision engineering and cutting-edge innovations, usually pioneered in the most luxurious models. Starting in 1971, the 107 was offered in convertible (SL) and coupé (SLC) forms and a myriad of engine choices (2.8L, 3.0L, 3.5L, 3.8L, 4.2L, 4.5L, 5.0L, 5.6L). Along nearly 20 years of production, the timeless design was updated with multiple refinements, such as KE-Jetronic fuel injection, airbag, ABS, better sound insulation, tougher rustproofing, and more sophisticated automatic climate controls.
The 107-series ceased production in 1989, with over a quarter million units sold, making it the most popular SL ever, and a symbol of sophistication and success to this very day. The very last of the steel-and-chrome Mercedes, this generation SL is highly sought after due to its impeccable build quality, durable design and usability on a day-to-day basis —an excellent compromise of modern safety standards, mechanical reliability, and classic looks.
THIS PARTICULAR CAR
One can argue that out of a 20-year production run, the 560SL is the pinnacle of refinement of the R107 series, sharing many of the luxurious appointments of the marque's contemporary flagship.
Originally sold at Rallye Motors in Roslyn, New York, this 560SL has only covered 760 miles from new. The car is original in its entirety, from the factory Pirelli tyres to the glossy Anthracite grey paint. The interior shows zero signs of wear —seats are firm and supportive, the leather-wrapped steering wheel is fully intact, all burlwood surfaces still retain their mirror-like luster, and instrument needles are the bright —and rarely seen— factory orange. The car smells new. In the engine bay, all plastic, metal and cadmium-plated are simply untouched; with some of the original ‘cosmoline' protector still showing. Running condition, needless to say, is that of a new car —yet we recommend replacing the original tyres should it be driven often. For the serious Mercedes collector, this is a true preservation example that will take its owner on a time warp to the Mercedes showroom in 1989.
