Summary

This 1998 Toyota Hiace represents the legendary H100 generation, a vehicle widely recognized across the GCC for its near-indestructible mechanical nature. While many vans from this era have seen grueling commercial use, this Japanese-spec example offers a well-preserved alternative for those needing high-capacity transport or a reliable business workhorse. The 3.0-litre engine paired with a manual gearbox provides a tactile and durable driving experience that modern vans often lack. Its white exterior remains the most practical choice for the region, reflecting heat and maintaining the strongest resale demand in the local market. For a buyer in the Emirates or Saudi Arabia, this is a rare opportunity to own a legendary platform known for keeping maintenance costs to an absolute minimum.

This Car vs Other 1998 Hiaces

While typical 1998 models in the GCC have often exceeded 500,000 km in commercial service, this unit sits at a relatively modest 271,900 km, suggesting significantly more remaining service life. As a Japanese-spec import, it often benefits from better-preserved interior plastics and upholstery compared to local units exposed to decades of intense desert UV. The white exterior is the gold standard for resale in this segment, ensuring it remains highly liquid in the used market.

STANDARD vs Lower Trims

The Standard trim on this Hiace focuses on utility and maximum seating capacity, offering the 9+ seat configuration that is highly sought after for staff transport or large family logistics. It foregoes the complex air suspension or electronic gadgets of the 'Super Custom' luxury trims, which is a major advantage for long-term ownership in the GCC as there are fewer components to fail in the extreme heat. You get functional essentials like rear cooling vents which are critical for passenger comfort during Gulf summers.

Hiace vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Nissan Urvan of the same era, the Hiace is frequently preferred by GCC workshops due to the superior availability of both genuine and aftermarket parts. While the Mitsubishi L300 offers a smaller footprint, the Hiace provides a more stable highway ride and a larger 70-litre fuel tank, making it better suited for long-distance trips between cities like Dubai and Muscat. Its reputation for engine longevity remains the benchmark against which all other regional commercial vans are measured.

Running Costs & Resale

Toyota dominates the GCC used market, and the H100 Hiace specifically enjoys one of the lowest depreciation rates in the commercial segment. Parts are available in every corner of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, from authorized Al Futtaim or Abdullah Abdulghani centers to independent distributors. Fuel consumption for the 3.0-litre petrol engine typically averages between 11.5L and 12.5L/100km depending on the load, and it is designed to run reliably on standard local fuel grades.

Performance & Capability

The 142 hp output is delivered through a rugged 5-speed manual transmission, providing the driver with full control over the power band—essential when navigating heavy loads or steep inclines. The rear-wheel-drive layout and simple torsion bar front suspension are built to handle the varied road conditions of the region, from smooth motorways to gravel industrial sites. With a 190 mm ground clearance, it easily clears the speed humps and uneven terrain often encountered in suburban and commercial areas.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the focus is on maximizing passenger volume with a versatile 9+ seating arrangement that allows for high-occupancy transport without feeling cramped. The cabin is equipped with high-capacity air conditioning, featuring dedicated vents for the rear rows to combat summer temperatures exceeding 45°C. The dashboard is designed for ease of use, with high-durability materials that resist cracking and wear over decades of use.

Safety

Safety in this 1998 model is centered around its robust body-on-frame construction and reliable braking system. Standard features for this trim include seatbelts for all passengers and a clear, high-visibility seating position for the driver to monitor fast-moving highway traffic. While it predates modern ADAS systems, its mechanical simplicity and predictable handling characteristics make it a dependable choice for experienced drivers in the region.

The bottom line

This is the ideal choice for a GCC buyer seeking a bulletproof high-capacity van that prioritizes mechanical durability and ease of repair over modern complexity.
