Summary

This 2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S is a formidable performance SUV that represents the final era of the legendary M157 5.5-litre biturbo V8. With its hand-built engine and 'S' trim designation, it offers a significant power advantage over the standard AMG model, making it a highly relevant sleeper in the GCC performance market. The striking red exterior is a bold choice that stands out against the sea of silver and white across the Emirates, offering a unique personality for the enthusiast buyer. Having covered 88,000 km, this Japanese-spec example has bypassed the steepest portion of its depreciation curve while remaining mechanically fresh for the region's high-speed highway demands. For a buyer in the GCC, this remains one of the most cost-effective ways to access elite-level acceleration and a bespoke luxury cabin.

This Car vs Other 2016 GLE 63 AMGs

At 88,000 km, this vehicle's mileage is significantly lower than the GCC average for a 2016 model, which typically sees 20,000–25,000 km annually. While many examples from this era have surpassed the 150,000 km mark, this unit retains the mechanical tightness required for reliable cross-border drives. As a Japanese-spec vehicle, it has likely benefited from the strict maintenance standards and lower-speed driving environment common in that market before arriving in the UAE.

S vs Lower Trims

The 'S' trim is the top-tier configuration, adding 27 extra horsepower and 60 Nm of torque over the base GLE 63 AMG. Beyond the engine tune, this trim includes 21-inch AMG cross-spoke wheels and red brake calipers as standard, features that command a premium in the local used market. Interior upgrades include the AMG Performance steering wheel and Nappa leather upholstery, providing a more executive feel during long commutes between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

GLE 63 AMG vs Segment Rivals

The GLE 63 S primarily competes with the BMW X5 M and the Porsche Cayenne Turbo. While rivals focus on track-like stiffness, the Mercedes leads in raw engine character and mid-range torque, making it more comfortable for daily GCC traffic. Its 93-litre fuel tank also provides a superior cruising range for long desert highway stretches compared to some smaller-capacity competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption typically averages 11.8 L/100km on highways, though GCC city traffic can see this rise toward 15.7 L/100km. Mercedes-Benz maintains one of the most extensive authorized service networks in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, ensuring parts for the 5.5L V8 are readily available. While European performance SUVs depreciate faster than Japanese luxury alternatives, the 'S' trim historically retains a higher percentage of its value due to its status as the range-topping enthusiast choice.

Performance & Capability

The 585 hp output allows this SUV to reach 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds, a figure that remains competitive with brand-new performance models. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system is rear-biased (40:60), providing a sporty handling feel while maintaining stability on sand-dusted roads. Equipped with AMG Ride Control air suspension, it can adapt instantly from a soft cruising mode to a firm, high-speed setting for the highway.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is tailored for the GCC climate, featuring standard ventilated front seats and a powerful multi-zone climate control system with rear vents to keep all five passengers cool during peak summer. The 690-litre boot provides ample space for family road trips, and the acoustic glass ensures a quiet environment even at 140 km/h. High-quality Nappa leather and an Alcantara-lined steering wheel provide a tactile sense of luxury that defines the AMG flagship experience.

Safety

This GLE 63 S comes standard with a comprehensive safety suite including Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, which are essential for navigating the fast-moving multi-lane highways of the GCC. The PRE-SAFE system and Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control provide an extra layer of protection during long-distance drives. Additionally, the 360-degree camera system makes parking this large SUV effortless in tight urban spaces like Downtown Dubai or Riyadh.

The bottom line

For the buyer seeking the soul of a hand-built V8 biturbo combined with SUV practicality, this low-mileage 'S' model offers exceptional performance value in the current GCC market.
