Summary

This 2017 BMW 440i M Sport is a standout example of the 'Life Cycle Impulse' (LCI) facelift, pairing the legendary B58 straight-six engine with a retractable hardtop. Its white-on-M-Sport aesthetic is one of the most resilient combinations for GCC resale, reflecting the sun effectively while maintaining a sharp, performance-focused silhouette. With an average of roughly 18,000 km per year, this car sits slightly below the high-mileage GCC average, signaling it has been used as a primary GT rather than hidden away. It offers a more mechanical and engaging rear-wheel-drive experience compared to the newer fabric-roof models, making it a favorite for local enthusiasts who value the security and silence of a folding metal roof. For the UAE buyer, this is a refined daily driver that transforms into an open-air cruiser for those cooler weekend drives to Jebel Jais.

This Car vs Other 2017 440is

At 129,000 km, this vehicle’s mileage is average for a 2017 model in the GCC, where 20,000 km annually is the standard benchmark. Its white exterior is the highest-demand color in the regional used market, ensuring faster liquidity and better value retention than darker shades. Being a facelifted (LCI) 2017 model, it benefits from updated LED lighting and the improved B58 engine, which is widely considered more reliable in high-heat environments than the previous N55 unit.

M SPORT vs Lower Trims

The M Sport trim is the most coveted specification for the 4 Series in the Middle East, adding the aggressive aerodynamic body kit, M-specific wheels, and the M leather steering wheel. Unlike the 430i, the 440i M Sport often includes the Harman Kardon surround sound system and the larger M Sport brakes as standard equipment. These features, along with the Shadowline exterior trim, command a significantly higher premium at resale than the 'Luxury' or 'Advantage' lines.

440i vs Segment Rivals

While the Audi A5 Cabriolet and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet utilize fabric soft-tops, the 440i features a three-piece retractable hardtop that offers superior acoustic insulation and security in the GCC. The BMW's 3.0L inline-six is often praised for having a smoother power delivery than the equivalent Audi V6, while the 440i's 60-liter fuel tank provides a generous cruising range for long highway stretches between the Emirates. Its rear-wheel-drive layout provides a more traditional sports car feel that is increasingly rare in this segment.

Running Costs & Resale

The 440i averages approximately 7.2L/100km on combined cycles, though GCC city traffic can see this rise to around 10.5L/100km. Service intervals are typically every 12,000 km, and BMW's extensive authorized network across the UAE and Saudi Arabia makes maintenance straightforward. While European luxury cars generally see a 12–15% annual depreciation in the GCC, the 440i M Sport retains its value better than the 420i or 430i due to its more desirable powertrain. GCC-spec versions like this one avoid the insurance and warranty hurdles often associated with imported American or European models.

Performance & Capability

The heart of this 440i is the turbocharged B58 engine, delivering 326 hp and 450 Nm of torque, which allows for effortless overtaking on fast-moving highways like the E11. It hits 0-100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, with power delivered seamlessly through the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The M Sport suspension is tuned for high-speed stability, ensuring the car feels planted even with the roof retracted. Despite the added weight of the convertible mechanism, the rear-wheel-drive balance remains one of the sharpest in the executive convertible class.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is centered around the iDrive 6.0 system, which is optimized for quick use during the drive. Standard 4-seat configuration offers genuine space for adults in the front, while the hardtop provides coupe-level silence when the AC is working at full tilt during the peak of summer. Interior highlights include the M Sport seats with memory function and high-quality Dakota leather that withstands the local climate well. With the roof up, the boot offers 370 liters of space, making it surprisingly practical for a weekend trip.

Safety

Safety features on this M Sport trim include a comprehensive airbag system and BMW's Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which is essential for maintaining grip on sand-dusted highway surfaces. It comes standard with front and rear parking sensors and a rearview camera to assist with the restricted rear visibility typical of convertibles. Bi-LED headlights provide exceptional clarity for night driving on unlit desert roads, while the rollover protection system provides peace of mind when driving top-down.

The bottom line

For the buyer seeking a high-performance daily convertible that can handle the GCC summer as well as it handles a winter coastal cruise, this 440i M Sport is the definitive choice. It represents the perfect balance of B58 reliability, M Sport prestige, and the classic security of a hardtop roof.
