Summary

This 9-year-old Explorer XLT offers a robust seven-seat configuration that remains a staple for growing families in the GCC. The combination of a black exterior and a naturally aspirated V6 makes it a resilient choice for the local market, where these specifications are consistently in demand. While the mileage reflects its age, the American spec provides a high level of interior equipment often prioritized for long-distance highway comfort. For a buyer seeking a versatile AWD workhorse that handles the school run and weekend trips to the coast with equal ease, this listing represents a proven platform. The Explorer stands out in the region for its car-like road manners paired with genuine utility for cross-border family travel.

This Car vs Other 2017 Explorers

At 178,000 km, this vehicle has been driven approximately 19,700 km per year, which is slightly below the typical GCC annual average of 20,000 to 25,000 km. The black exterior is a highly preferred resale color in the regional market, offering a sophisticated look that holds its value better than brighter or niche shades. As an American spec model, it features a distinct equipment profile compared to local GCC variants, often including specific technology bundles for the interior.

XLT vs Lower Trims

Moving up to the XLT trim from the base model adds several key upgrades that GCC buyers value, including standard roof rails for extra cargo capacity and intelligent access with push-button start. It also replaces the standard plastic trim with body-colored door handles and introduces a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Most importantly, the XLT serves as the gateway to the upgraded SYNC 3 infotainment system and optional safety features like blind-spot monitoring that are not available on entry-level units.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer competes directly with the Toyota Highlander and Honda Pilot, leading the group in raw towing capacity at 2,268 kg, making it the better choice for those hauling trailers or jet skis. Its unibody construction provides a smoother, more composed highway ride than body-on-frame competitors like the Nissan Xterra. Additionally, the Ford’s standard 3.5L V6 offers a linear power delivery that is often preferred over the smaller turbocharged engines found in some modern crossovers for long-term durability in extreme heat.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.5L V6 AWD typically averages between 12 and 14 L/100km in mixed GCC driving conditions, depending on city traffic density. While American spec vehicles may have different warranty terms than GCC spec cars, the Ford authorized service network is well-established across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, ensuring parts availability is rarely an issue. The Explorer maintains a stable depreciation curve, typically retaining about 54% of its value after five years, which is competitive for the mid-size SUV segment.

Performance & Capability

The 290 hp V6 engine provides plenty of muscle for confident highway overtaking, a necessity on fast-moving multi-lane roads like Sheikh Zayed Road. The Intelligent AWD system includes a Terrain Management System with selectable modes for grass, gravel, and snow, offering enhanced stability during weekend excursions to more rugged terrain. With a ground clearance of approximately 200 mm, it easily navigates high curbs and uneven sand tracks while maintaining a car-like 11.85 m turning circle for easy urban parking.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for family logistics, featuring a dedicated rear climate zone with vents for the second and third rows to ensure passenger comfort during peak summer months. Acoustic glass is standard on the front windows to reduce wind noise during high-speed highway cruising between emirates. The flexible 60/40 second-row and 50/50 third-row seats fold flat to create a massive cargo area of over 2,300 liters, making it ideal for large grocery runs or camping gear.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on this trim includes a comprehensive airbag system with side-curtain protection for all three rows and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control (RSC). The integrated Trailer Sway Control is particularly useful for those utilizing the tow hitch on long desert drives. It also features rear parking sensors and a rearview camera to assist with maneuvering this large SUV in tight city spaces, providing an extra layer of confidence for daily family duties.

The bottom line

For the GCC family buyer who needs a dependable seven-seater with strong towing credentials and a premium black finish, this Explorer XLT is a balanced and practical opportunity.
