• 5-star overall NHTSA safety rating (2017)

Summary

This 2017 Ford Explorer XLT offers a compelling balance of three-row utility and V6 power that remains highly sought after in the GCC used market. While this American-spec model provides the same iconic styling and robust performance as local variants, it enters the market at a more accessible price point for buyers prioritizing features and cabin space. The black exterior is a perennial favorite for resale in the region, standing out in professional and family environments alike. As a versatile 7-seater, it excels at navigating both fast-moving city highways and long-distance weekend road trips between emirates. Prospective owners should note that regular maintenance at specialized local service centers ensures this powertrain continues to handle the region's high summer temperatures reliably.

This Car vs Other 2017 Explorers

With 151,000 km, this vehicle sits comfortably within the expected mileage range for a 2017 model in the GCC, where annual averages often reach 25,000 km due to highway-heavy commutes. The black exterior remains one of the top three resale colors in the local market, offering better value retention than more niche shades. While American-spec vehicles typically trade at a discount compared to GCC-spec units, they offer an identical mechanical foundation and often come with high interior specifications that appeal to budget-conscious family buyers.

XLT vs Lower Trims

The XLT trim significantly elevates the ownership experience over the base model by adding essential comfort and tech features. Key upgrades include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an 8-way power-adjustable driver's seat, and the convenience of Intelligent Access with push-button start. It also unlocks availability for the foot-activated power liftgate and the SYNC 3 infotainment system, which is a major draw for UAE drivers who value seamless smartphone integration during long drives.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer leads many rivals like the Nissan Pathfinder and Honda Pilot in pure engine output, with its 290 hp V6 providing superior highway overtaking confidence. Its 70-liter fuel tank is well-suited for long-haul desert drives, such as the journey from Dubai to Salalah. Additionally, the Explorer's flat-folding third row offers a more versatile cargo solution than several competitors, making it a favorite for families with diverse recreational needs.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.5L V6 typically averages around 11.2 L/100km, though this can vary in GCC stop-start city traffic. Parts availability is excellent across the UAE and wider GCC, with numerous specialized service centers capable of maintaining American-spec Ford vehicles. While American imports depreciate faster initially than GCC-spec units, they offer a lower entry cost and stable value at the three-to-five-year ownership mark for well-maintained examples.

Performance & Capability

The 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 engine delivers a verified 290 horsepower and 346 Nm of torque, enabling confident acceleration and a 0-100 km/h time of approximately 8.7 seconds. The All-Wheel Drive system is paired with a 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, providing stability on gravel tracks and during heavy rain on highway commutes. With a maximum braked towing capacity of up to 2,268 kg when properly equipped, it is highly capable of hauling light trailers or jet skis for weekend adventures.

Comfort & Cabin

Designed for long-distance family travel, the cabin features three rows of seating to accommodate seven passengers comfortably. The XLT trim includes dual-zone automatic climate control, which is essential for maintaining a cool cabin during the peak of the UAE summer. Generous legroom in the first two rows and dedicated rear air conditioning vents ensure that all passengers remain comfortable, even on cross-border road trips across the GCC.

Safety

The 2017 Ford Explorer achieved a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, supported by a comprehensive suite of airbags including front, side, and curtain coverage. Standard safety tech on the XLT includes AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Curve Control, which are particularly beneficial for maintaining traction on sandy road shoulders or during sudden maneuvers on high-speed highways. Blind-spot monitoring and rear parking sensors are common features that assist in navigating busy urban parking environments like those found in Dubai and Riyadh.

The bottom line

This Explorer XLT is the ideal choice for a growing family seeking the presence and power of a full-size American SUV at a highly competitive price. It offers the perfect combination of 7-seat versatility and all-wheel-drive confidence for the diverse driving conditions of the GCC.
