Summary

This Ford Explorer Sport is a standout choice for GCC buyers looking for performance that rivals luxury SUVs without the premium price tag. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo engine provides effortless overtaking on high-speed highways like the E11, while the Sport-tuned suspension offers better composure than the standard model. In a market where white and silver dominate, this Burgundy exterior offers a sophisticated point of difference while maintaining respectable resale interest. For a seven-seater at this mileage, it offers a high level of standard equipment that remains modern and relevant for daily family use. The combination of all-wheel drive and a spacious three-row cabin makes it one of the most versatile American SUVs available in the region.

This Car vs Other 2016 Explorers

With 160,000 km, this vehicle sits at the expected average for a 2016 model in the GCC, where long-distance commuting is common. While many Explorers of this era are basic fleet models, this Sport trim is a significantly higher-specification variant that has traditionally held a higher percentage of its value. The Burgundy color is a premium choice that ages better than lighter metallics in the harsh local sun.

SPORT vs Lower Trims

The Sport trim is a massive leap over the XLT or Limited, primarily replacing the standard 290 hp engine with the 365 hp twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. Beyond the power, you get a sport-tuned suspension for sharper handling and unique blacked-out exterior trim that GCC buyers find highly desirable. Inside, it adds premium features like the 12-speaker Sony audio system and ventilated front seats, which are essential for staying comfortable during the UAE summer.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Honda Pilot or Chevrolet Traverse of the same year, the Explorer Sport leads with a significantly more powerful turbocharged engine and a higher braked towing capacity of 2,268 kg. While the Traverse offers more raw cargo volume, the Explorer provides a more premium cabin feel and superior high-speed stability. It remains the preferred choice for those who want a family car that doesn't sacrifice driving dynamics.

Running Costs & Resale

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine typically averages around 13.0 L/100km, which is efficient for its power class during highway cruising between emirates. Ford has one of the most robust authorized service networks in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, ensuring that parts and maintenance are accessible even outside major cities. In the GCC market, the Explorer follows a stable depreciation curve of roughly 12–15% annually, making it a predictable investment compared to European luxury rivals.

Performance & Capability

Producing 365 hp and 475 Nm of torque, this SUV can sprint from 0-100 km/h in approximately 6.4 seconds, making it one of the quickest seven-seaters in its price bracket. The intelligent All-Wheel Drive system features a Terrain Management System, allowing you to switch between modes for sand, mud, or grass during weekend trips. Its sport-tuned chassis ensures that despite its size, the car remains planted and responsive during sudden highway maneuvers.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for large families, featuring seven seats with a power-folding third row that makes switching between passengers and cargo effortless. For the GCC climate, the ventilated front seats and powerful tri-zone climate control with dedicated rear vents ensure all passengers stay cool. The interior is insulated with acoustic glass, providing a quiet environment that effectively blocks out wind noise during fast highway drives.

Safety

This Sport trim comes standard with a comprehensive safety suite including Blind Spot Monitoring and Cross-Traffic Alert, which are vital for navigating busy multi-lane roads in Dubai or Riyadh. It also features Ford’s innovative inflatable rear seatbelts and a standard rearview camera to assist with parking this large SUV. The 2016 model earned high safety marks, providing peace of mind for family-focused owners.

The bottom line

For the buyer who needs seven seats but refuses to drive a slow car, this Explorer Sport offers the best balance of twin-turbo power and American SUV practicality in the local market.
