Summary

This 2017 Ford Explorer XLT is a quintessential family workhorse, offering a versatile seven-seat layout that remains one of the most practical in the mid-size SUV segment. With its black exterior—a high-demand resale color in the GCC—and the naturally aspirated 3.5L V6, it balances proven durability with the power needed for confident highway cruising across the Emirates. The XLT trim strikes a smart middle ground, providing key tech like a rearview camera and power-adjustable seating without the complexity of higher-mileage luxury systems. While this is an American spec vehicle, the Explorer's massive popularity in the region ensures that parts and expert service remain readily available at competitive rates. It represents an excellent entry point for growing families who need all-wheel-drive stability and genuine cargo flexibility for weekend road trips.

This Car vs Other 2017 Explorers

With 178,000 km, this Explorer aligns with the typical annual usage seen in the GCC, where long-distance commuting between cities is standard. While the mileage is higher than garage-kept examples, the 3.5L V6 is renowned for its longevity when maintained. The black exterior is a significant advantage, as it remains one of the fastest-moving colors in the UAE’s used market.

XLT vs Lower Trims

The XLT trim provides a meaningful step up from the base model, most notably adding rear parking sensors and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It also features a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and upgraded exterior styling with LED signature lighting. These additions are highly valued by GCC buyers looking for extra comfort during long summer drives.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer competes directly with the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander, leading with a more robust 2,268 kg towing capacity for those hauling jet skis or trailers. Its Intelligent AWD system with Terrain Management offers specific modes that handle loose gravel and sand better than road-only crossovers. Additionally, the flat-folding third row provides superior cargo adaptability compared to several rivals in this year group.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.5L V6 typically averages around 12.5 L/100km, performing efficiently on the open highway but rising in stop-start traffic. Ford's extensive service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait ensures that maintenance remains affordable and convenient. As an American spec model, it will experience a steeper initial depreciation than a GCC spec equivalent, providing a lower entry price for the second owner.

Performance & Capability

The 290 hp V6 delivers smooth, linear power, making it ideal for the high-speed overtakes common on the E11 or E311 highways. The Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system provides confidence during the occasional heavy rain or when navigating sandy tracks to reach weekend campsites. With a ground clearance of approximately 198 mm, it comfortably handles speed bumps and uneven desert fringes.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for large families, featuring a 60/40 split second row and a 50/50 third row that accommodates seven passengers. The standard tri-zone automatic climate control is essential for the GCC, allowing rear passengers to manage their own cooling during the summer months. Acoustic glass and a quiet cabin design help isolate road noise during long-distance travel between emirates.

Safety

Safety is a priority with a full suite of airbags including front, side, and curtain coverage for all three rows. Standard stability controls like AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability and Curve Control are particularly effective at maintaining vehicle path on fast highway bends. The XLT also includes a rearview camera and SOS Post-Crash Alert System as standard equipment.

The bottom line

This Explorer XLT is the ideal choice for a budget-conscious family in the GCC who needs a dependable seven-seater with proven V6 power and high-demand styling.
