Summary

This 2017 Ford Explorer Limited represents a strong family value in the GCC, offering the upscale features of a near-luxury SUV without the premium price tag. The 3.5L V6 engine is preferred locally for its long-term reliability and ability to handle long highway stretches across the Emirates. Its beige exterior is a smart choice for the region, effectively managing heat absorption and maintaining consistent resale appeal in the pre-owned market. Compared to rivals, the Explorer stands out with a more car-like, refined ride that doesn't sacrifice the seven-seat utility required for larger families. For a buyer seeking a well-equipped daily driver that has already moved past its steepest depreciation phase, this GCC-spec Limited is a balanced and practical opportunity.

This Car vs Other 2017 Explorers

With 184,000 km, this vehicle sits slightly above the average GCC annual usage for its age, yet it remains mechanically relevant due to its robust 6-cylinder configuration. The beige finish is a highly practical resale asset in this market, as it hides dust well and stays cooler under the intense local sun than darker shades. Buyers often prioritize these GCC-spec models over imports for their cooling efficiency and simplified registration process.

LIMITED vs Lower Trims

The Limited trim is a significant step up from the XLT, introducing luxury features essential for GCC comfort, such as ventilated front seats and a power-folding third row. It also upgrades the cabin technology with the SYNC 3 interface and a premium 12-speaker Sony audio system, which are high-value items at resale. Additionally, the Limited includes a 180-degree front camera and power-adjustable pedals, providing a more tailored and safer driving experience.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

In the competitive mid-size SUV segment, the Ford Explorer leads the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander in offering a more composed, highway-biased ride quality. Its interior packaging feels more modern than the same-year Highlander, and it offers superior tech integration through the SYNC 3 platform. The naturally aspirated V6 provides predictable power delivery that many GCC drivers find more reliable for high-heat conditions compared to smaller turbocharged competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

The 3.5L V6 typically achieves a combined fuel consumption of approximately 13.0 L/100km, performing efficiently on long-distance highway routes between cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Ford enjoys one of the most extensive authorized service networks in the UAE through Al Tayer Motors and Premier Motors, ensuring parts availability and professional maintenance are never an issue. While it depreciates faster than Japanese rivals initially, a 2017 model has reached a price floor that offers excellent feature-per-dirham value.

Performance & Capability

The 290-horsepower V6 engine provides smooth acceleration, making highway merging and overtaking effortless even when the seven-seat cabin is fully occupied. With 7.8 inches of ground clearance, it easily manages gravel tracks and suburban obstacles, though it is primarily designed for road-going family comfort. The SelectShift automatic transmission allows for manual control when needed, providing confidence during weekend road trips across the diverse terrain of the GCC.

Comfort & Cabin

Designed for maximum occupancy, the seven-seat layout is supported by a powerful dual-zone climate control system with dedicated rear vents to combat extreme summer temperatures. The Limited trim adds perforated leather seats that are both heated and cooled, ensuring front passengers remain comfortable regardless of the weather. Acoustic glass and improved insulation provide a quiet cabin environment, isolating passengers from road noise during long highway commutes.

Safety

Safety is a priority in the Limited trim, which features the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) to assist in fast-moving highway traffic. It comes standard with a comprehensive airbag suite and a rearview camera, supplemented by front and rear parking sensors to make maneuvering this large SUV easier. The sturdy unibody construction and electronic stability control provide a secure foundation for family travel across the region's high-speed roads.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec Explorer Limited is the ideal choice for a family that wants maximum features and third-row utility without the high cost of a newer model. It is a well-sorted, high-spec workhorse perfectly suited for the UAE's driving environment.
