Summary

This 2018 Ford Explorer offers a balanced entry point into the large SUV segment, combining a powerful 3.5L V6 with a versatile seven-seat layout. The black exterior remains a top-tier choice for resale in the UAE, while the GCC regional specification ensures the cooling systems are optimized for local summer extremes. With 130,000 km, this vehicle is well within the typical mileage range for a GCC-driven family cruiser, having averaged roughly 21,000 km per year. It stands out for its high cargo capacity even when fully occupied, making it a dependable choice for road trips between emirates or large family logistics.

This Car vs Other 2018 Explorers

At 130,000 km, this Explorer sits right at the average mileage mark for a 2018 model in the UAE, where annual highway commutes typically add 20,000 to 25,000 km. The black exterior is highly sought after in the regional used market, providing a distinct advantage for future resale value compared to niche colors. Being a GCC-spec vehicle, it retains full compatibility with local authorized service centers, unlike imported North American units.

BASE vs Lower Trims

The Base trim serves as the essential foundation for the Explorer lineup, yet it comes standard with features that GCC buyers prioritize, such as rear air conditioning with dedicated controls to handle the summer heat. Unlike many entry-level rivals, it retains a leather-wrapped shift knob and the SYNC infotainment system, offering a more refined cabin feel. It provides the same 3.5L V6 powertrain found in higher XLT trims, ensuring no compromise on highway overtaking power.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer leads rivals like the Honda Pilot and Kia Sorento in cargo versatility, offering 594 litres of space even behind the third row—significantly more than many in this class. Its 3.5L naturally aspirated V6 is favored by local buyers for its long-term durability and predictable maintenance compared to the smaller turbocharged engines found in some European competitors. The American-designed cooling system is specifically engineered to maintain cabin comfort during peak UAE temperatures.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.5L V6 typically averages around 12.7 L/100km, which is efficient for a seven-passenger vehicle on long GCC highway runs. Maintenance is straightforward due to the extensive network of Ford authorized centers across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, ensuring parts availability is never a concern. The Explorer maintains a stable depreciation curve in the GCC, typically holding its value better than European luxury SUVs in the same price bracket.

Performance & Capability

The 294 hp V6 engine provides smooth, linear acceleration that is ideal for navigating fast-moving highway traffic in Dubai or Riyadh. With a 6-speed automatic transmission, it offers a relaxed cruising experience and sufficient low-end torque for full family loads. While this Front Wheel Drive configuration is optimized for on-road efficiency and city maneuverability, it retains a 198 mm ground clearance to handle gravel tracks and suburban obstacles with ease.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for family logistics, featuring a genuine seven-seat configuration with adult-usable legroom in the second row. Ford’s powerful air conditioning system includes dedicated rear vents, ensuring the third row stays cool even during the peak of July. The interior uses durable cloth upholstery that resists heat soak better than leather in the local climate, while the 2,313 litres of maximum cargo space with seats folded makes it a class-leading workhorse for furniture or camping gear.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes a comprehensive airbag system and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control, which is vital for maintaining composure on sandy or rain-slicked surfaces. A rearview camera with a dedicated washer nozzle ensures visibility is maintained even in dusty GCC conditions. The Explorer’s robust unibody construction provides a stable platform that earned high safety marks in global crash testing, offering peace of mind for family transport.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec Explorer is an ideal match for a family looking for maximum space and reliable V6 power without the premium cost of higher trims. Its strong resale color and local market specification make it a safe and practical investment for the long term.
