Summary

This 2017 Mitsubishi Montero Sport GLS Premium is a versatile seven-seater that bridges the gap between urban comfort and genuine off-road capability. Finished in a practical Brown that handles GCC dust exceptionally well, this GCC-spec SUV offers a robust 3.0L V6 powertrain paired with the advanced Super Select 4WD-II system. It stands out from lighter crossovers thanks to its rugged body-on-frame construction, making it as suitable for weekend desert excursions as it is for the school run. With 120,000 km, it sits at a fair usage point for its age in the regional market, offering a well-maintained balance of modern tech and Mitsubishi's legendary durability. For a buyer in the UAE or wider GCC, the widespread availability of parts and service makes this one of the most sensible ownership propositions in the mid-size SUV segment.

This Car vs Other 2017 Montero Sports

With 120,000 km on the odometer, this vehicle has averaged approximately 17,000 km per year, which is notably lower than the GCC annual average of 20,000–25,000 km. While many examples of this vintage have been pushed into high-mileage territory through heavy cross-border travel, this unit represents a more conservative usage profile. The Brown exterior is a strategic choice for the region, offering better heat management and higher resale appeal than darker tones while requiring less frequent washing than white.

GLS PREMIUM vs Lower Trims

The GLS Premium trim significantly elevates the cabin experience over the base GLX and standard GLS models by adding leather upholstery and a premium 6-speaker audio system. Crucially for the GCC climate, it features a dual-zone automatic climate control system with dedicated rear vents to ensure all seven passengers remain cool. It also includes high-value tech such as the 360-degree Multi-Around Monitor and an electronic parking brake with auto-hold, features often missing in lower specifications.

Montero Sport vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Toyota Fortuner and Isuzu MU-X, the Montero Sport is often cited for its superior ride comfort due to its multi-link rear suspension setup. While rivals often rely on more basic part-time 4WD systems, this Mitsubishi features the Super Select 4WD-II, which allows for high-speed pavement driving in 4H mode—a major safety advantage on greasy, post-rain GCC roads. Furthermore, its 70-litre fuel tank provides a generous range for long-distance highway hauls between cities like Dubai and Muscat.

Running Costs & Resale

The 3.0L V6 is a tried-and-tested engine in the region, designed to run efficiently on 95-octane petrol without the complexity of turbochargers, ensuring lower long-term maintenance costs. Service intervals are typically every 10,000 km, and Mitsubishi’s massive service footprint across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman ensures competitive labor rates. The Montero Sport enjoys strong value retention in the GCC, typically depreciating at a slower rate than its European counterparts due to the high demand for reliable family 4x4s.

Performance & Capability

Equipped with 218 mm of ground clearance and an 8-speed automatic transmission, this SUV is engineered for both efficiency and technical terrain. The Super Select 4WD-II system offers four distinct modes, including a locked 4LLc for heavy sand and steep inclines, ensuring you never feel under-equipped for a desert weekend. On the highway, the V6 provides smooth power delivery, making overtaking effortless even when the vehicle is fully loaded with seven passengers and cargo.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior is designed for family logistics, featuring a flexible 2-3-2 seating arrangement where the third row can be stowed to create a flat loading floor. Sound insulation is impressive for the segment, keeping the cabin quiet during high-speed highway cruising. Standard equipment on this GLS Premium includes a sunroof and a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth, providing a modern environment for daily commuting in stop-start city traffic.

Safety

Safety is a priority in the GLS Premium, which comes equipped with a suite of active systems including Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC) and Hill Start Assist. The inclusion of the 360-degree camera system is particularly useful for maneuvering this large SUV in tight urban parking spaces. For highway safety, it features multiple airbags and a reinforced RISE body structure, providing peace of mind during the fast-paced driving conditions common on major UAE motorways.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec Montero Sport is the ideal choice for a family looking for Pajero-levels of durability with more modern tech and better fuel efficiency. At 120,000 km, it offers a proven mechanical pedigree and premium trim features at a price point that represents excellent value in the current market.
