Mitsubishi Pajero GLS H/L PLATINUM

Highlights

• Genuine off-road rated
• Lowest depreciation in class

Summary

This 2017 Mitsubishi Pajero represents one of the most reliable and sought-after iterations of a legendary nameplate in the GCC market. With its robust 3.8L engine and the range-topping GLS H/L PLATINUM trim, it offers the perfect balance of rugged mechanical durability and premium cabin amenities. The mileage is exceptionally low for its age, especially considering that GCC vehicles typically accumulate distance quickly on long inter-city highways. Its grey exterior is a highly practical choice for the region, resisting the visible effects of fine desert dust while maintaining strong resale appeal. Compared to many modern crossovers that use car-based platforms, this model stands out with its genuine 4x4 architecture, making it a favorite for families who want a dependable daily driver that is equally capable of weekend desert adventures. For any buyer in the UAE or wider GCC, the primary advantage here is the massive service network and the legendary reliability that keeps these vehicles on the road for decades.

This Car vs Other 2017 Pajeros

When looking at the 2017 Pajero market in the GCC, this specific unit is a standout example due to its significantly lower-than-average mileage. While the regional average for a vehicle of this age typically sits between 140,000 and 175,000 km, this car has covered just 96,000 km, suggesting it was likely used as a secondary family vehicle rather than a heavy commuter. The grey exterior finish is one of the most stable colors for resale value in the UAE, consistently outperforming more niche colors when it comes time to trade in. Being the 3.8L variant, it is far more desirable than the smaller 3.0L models often found on the used market, providing the extra torque necessary for sand driving and highway overtaking. This specific vehicle also benefits from the GCC-spec cooling system, which was engineered to maintain optimal engine and transmission temperatures during the peak of the Arabian summer. Choosing this lower-mileage example ensures a longer mechanical lifespan and a much higher eventual trade-in value than the high-mileage alternatives currently available.

GLS H/L PLATINUM vs Lower Trims

Stepping up to the GLS H/L PLATINUM trim transforms the Pajero from a basic workhorse into a much more sophisticated family SUV. This top-tier trim adds the premium Rockford Fosgate acoustic design audio system, which is a massive upgrade over the standard units found in the base GLS models. It also features high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps with washers, providing superior visibility during night drives on unlit desert roads. Inside, the PLATINUM edition treats occupants to premium leather upholstery and a power-adjustable driver’s seat, features that are often missing from the mid-range fabric-interior trims. The inclusion of a large power sunroof and wood-grain interior accents adds an air of luxury that makes daily traffic in cities like Dubai or Riyadh much more pleasant. Furthermore, this trim includes the chrome package and 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, giving the car a more commanding presence on the road compared to the 17-inch steel or basic alloy wheels found on lower specifications.

Pajero vs Segment Rivals

In the competitive landscape of mid-sized SUVs, the Pajero consistently leads against rivals like the Toyota Prado and the Nissan Pathfinder when it comes to raw mechanical value and off-road geometry. While the Prado is its closest competitor, the Pajero offers a more engaging on-road driving experience due to its monocoque body with built-in ladder frame, which provides a lower center of gravity without sacrificing toughness. Compared to the Pathfinder, the Pajero is a much more capable off-roader, featuring a true low-range transfer case and a locking rear differential that the more road-biased Nissan lacks. Its short front and rear overhangs give it a superior approach and departure angle, making it the preferred choice for those who actually intend to explore the dunes of the Empty Quarter or the wadis of Oman. Additionally, the Pajero has a legendary air conditioning system that is widely regarded as one of the most powerful in the segment, a critical factor for anyone living in the GCC climate.

Running Costs & Resale

The 3.8L V6 engine in this Pajero is known for its bulletproof reliability, which translates into very predictable and manageable running costs. While its fuel consumption reflects its powerful displacement—averaging around 13.5L per 100km in mixed GCC driving—the trade-off is a powertrain that can easily exceed 300,000 km with basic maintenance. Service intervals are typically every 10,000 km, and because Mitsubishi has one of the most extensive parts networks in the Middle East, repairs are significantly more affordable than for European or American counterparts. Authorized service centers are located in almost every major city across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, ensuring you are never far from expert care. Resale value for the Pajero remains exceptionally high in the local market, often losing only 8-10% of its value annually compared to the 15% plus seen in luxury segments. This makes it one of the safest financial investments in the used car market, as there is always a high demand for well-maintained, low-mileage GCC-spec Pajeros.

Performance & Capability

At the heart of this Pajero is the 3.8-liter 24-valve V6 engine, producing 236 hp and a substantial 327 Nm of torque, which is essential for towing or navigating soft sand. The performance is delivered through the sophisticated Super Select II 4WD system, which allows the driver to switch between 2WD and 4WD at speeds of up to 100 km/h—a perfect feature for sudden changes in weather or road surface. When the pavement ends, the 4-Low range and locking rear differential provide the crawling power needed to climb steep dunes or navigate rocky terrain with confidence. On the highway, the 3.8L engine offers plenty of reserve power for overtaking fast-moving traffic, reaching a top speed of 200 km/h with ease. The ground clearance of 235 mm is among the best in its class, ensuring that the underbody remains protected even on rugged trails. Whether you are commuting between Abu Dhabi and Dubai or heading out for a weekend of camping, the Pajero provides a stable, powerful, and reassuringly mechanical feel.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior of the GLS H/L PLATINUM is designed for maximum versatility and comfort, accommodating seven passengers across three rows of seating. The second row offers ample legroom for adults, while the third row can be completely folded into the floor to create a massive cargo area, ideal for large grocery runs or camping gear. Mitsubishi’s multi-zone climate control is a standout feature, with dedicated rear vents that ensure passengers in the very back stay cool even when exterior temperatures hit 50°C. The cabin insulation is specifically designed to minimize wind noise during high-speed highway cruising, which is a common requirement for long-distance travel in the region. The premium Rockford Fosgate sound system features 12 strategically placed speakers, providing a concert-like experience that rivals many luxury sedans. Every touchpoint, from the leather-wrapped steering wheel to the padded armrests, is built to withstand the rigors of family life while providing a touch of class for the daily commute.

Safety

Safety is a paramount consideration for the Pajero, which features a reinforced RISE (Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution) body construction that effectively absorbs and redirects energy during a collision. This PLATINUM trim comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags, providing protection for all three rows of passengers. For the fast-paced highways of the UAE, the Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC) system is invaluable, helping the driver maintain a steady line during emergency maneuvers or on slippery surfaces. The vehicle also features a powerful anti-lock braking system (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), ensuring maximum stopping power regardless of how many passengers or how much cargo you are carrying. Rear parking sensors and a high-definition rearview camera are standard on this trim, making it much easier to maneuver this large SUV into tight mall parking spots or crowded residential areas.

The bottom line

This Pajero is the ideal choice for a GCC resident who values mechanical honesty and legendary reliability over flashy electronics. With its low mileage and top-tier PLATINUM specification, it offers a rare opportunity to own a peak-condition icon that will hold its value better than almost anything else on the road.
