Quite simply the VW Golf R Mk 7 is one of the best VW Golf’s yet, and more! This is one fun hot hatchback added to that with a Stage 3 tuning kit from Werks Motorsport and you have a beast of a car! In fact, it can make you laugh out loud at times. Upgrades to the turbo, mapping, suspension and brakes have transformed this in to the ultimate Golf. The chassis is rock solid, grip is outstanding, and the ride is a near perfect balance of comfort and firmness. Steering is light around parking lots and such, weighing up nicely as speeds increase. There are not many a car that feels this planted both going straight down the road and pushing it through corners. It is one of those rare cars that the harder you push, the better and more rewarding it feels.
Comparisons to the Audi S3 are inevitable, or the Benz A45 AMG (which is a lot more expensive). Overall, you get all the GTI practicality, but the R will hang with sports cars twice its price. What more could you want? The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo engine up front, four-wheel drive, and a dual-clutch DSG 7 Speed gearbox make for an excellent combination which cannot be matched in its class.
