Summary

This 2018 X4 M40i represents a sharp opportunity in the performance crossover market, showing 90,000 km over 8 years of use. For a high-performance GCC-spec BMW, this mileage is well within the typical annual range for the region and reflects consistent use rather than neglect. The M40i trim bridges the gap between everyday utility and sports car agility, outshining lower trims with its M-tuned chassis and superior tech. In the local market, the Black-on-Black combination remains a top-tier choice for resale strength, appealing to the region's preference for timeless executive colors. For a UAE buyer, this represents the final year of the first-generation production, benefiting from the most refined iteration of its powertrain before the model change.

This Car vs Other 2018 X4s

At 90,000 km, this X4 has averaged approximately 11,250 km per year, which is significantly lower than the GCC average of 20,000–25,000 km for premium SUVs. While many 2018 models in the region have crossed the 150,000 km mark, this example has been driven conservatively, preserving the mechanical integrity of the xDrive system. The Black exterior is one of the most liquid colors for BMW in the UAE, ensuring it stays relevant and easy to trade in later.

M40i vs Lower Trims

The M40i is a significant leap over the xDrive28i and xDrive30i, replacing the four-cylinder engines with a far more robust 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six. It adds essential performance hardware including M Sport adaptive suspension, upgraded M Sport brakes, and an M Sport rear differential for superior cornering. Inside, you receive the premium Harman Kardon surround-sound system and sport-bolstered seats that are optional or unavailable on base models.

X4 vs Segment Rivals

When compared to the Porsche Macan S or Mercedes-AMG GLC 43, the X4 M40i is often cited for having a more intuitive infotainment system through the iDrive controller. It offers a generous 500-liter boot, providing more practical cargo space than the Macan for weekend trips to the northern emirates. The X4 also maintains a reputation for lower routine maintenance costs in the UAE compared to its Porsche rivals.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for this B58 engine typically settles around 11.5L/100km in Dubai's stop-start traffic, dropping closer to 9L/100km on long highway stretches like the E11 to Abu Dhabi. BMW's GCC authorized service network is extensive, with major centers in every emirate and across Saudi Arabia, ensuring parts availability is never an issue. This generation of X4 typically depreciates by 12–15% annually in the UAE, slightly better than the segment average due to the high demand for the M Performance trim.

Performance & Capability

The M40i delivers a verified 0–100 km/h sprint in just 4.8 seconds, placing it firmly in the performance category. The All Wheel Drive (xDrive) system is rear-biased for a sporty feel but provides essential stability during sudden rain or on the gravel-strewn surfaces often found near wadis. With five distinct drive modes, you can shift from a comfortable highway cruiser to a sharp-handling athlete at the touch of a button.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is centered around a driver-oriented cockpit featuring high-grade leather and a thick M-Sport steering wheel. Three-zone automatic climate control is standard, which is critical for maintaining rear-seat comfort during the peak GCC summer months. The acoustic glazing helps isolate the cabin from wind noise during high-speed highway commutes, while the standard sunroof adds a sense of space to the coupe-like silhouette.

Safety

This X4 comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of safety tech including front and rear parking sensors with a rearview camera for tight urban parking. Active safety features like Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning provide peace of mind on long desert drives. The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) is specifically calibrated for the M40i to allow for spirited driving without compromising the car's ability to correct for low-traction surfaces.

The bottom line

This is a low-mileage, GCC-spec flagship for the buyer who wants M-Performance thrills without the harshness of a full 'M' car. In this color and trim, it remains one of the most desirable used crossovers in the UAE market today.
