Toyota Prado GXR

Highlights

• 271 hp from a 4.0L V6
• Low-range transfer case with locking differentials
• Extensive GCC authorised service network

Summary

This 2019 Toyota Prado GXR represents a highly sought-after middle ground in the GCC used market, offering the preferred 4.0L V6 engine for superior highway overtaking and desert capability. While the grey exterior provides a practical, high-resale alternative to standard white, the GCC regional specification ensures the heavy-duty cooling systems required for extreme summer heat are factory-standard. The GXR trim adds essential family comforts like a sunroof and tri-zone climate control, making it more versatile than the entry-level EXR. As one of the region's most resilient nameplates, this Prado is a reliable choice for families who need a vehicle that can transition from city school runs to weekend expeditions across the Emirates without hesitation.

This Car vs Other 2019 Prados

With 162,000 km, this vehicle sits near the average for a 2019 model in the GCC, where 25,000 km per year is standard due to frequent highway commuting between emirates. The grey exterior is a strong choice for the local market, offering excellent heat reflection while maintaining better resale value than more niche colors. Choosing the 4.0L V6 variant over the 2.7L four-cylinder version is a significant advantage for local buyers, providing the necessary power for safe highway cruising at 140 km/h.

GXR vs Lower Trims

The GXR trim provides a major equipment leap over the base EXR, most notably adding a sunroof and larger 19-inch alloy wheels that improve the vehicle's road presence. Safety is also enhanced with 7 airbags compared to the dual-airbag setup in lower trims. Crucially for the GCC climate, the GXR includes tri-zone automatic climate control, allowing the driver, front passenger, and rear occupants to manage their own cooling preferences independently.

Prado vs Segment Rivals

The Prado consistently leads rivals like the Mitsubishi Pajero and Nissan Pathfinder in resale value retention and off-road durability. Its body-on-frame construction makes it far more capable in deep sand than monocoque competitors, while the availability of genuine Toyota parts in even the most remote parts of the GCC gives it a clear edge for cross-border travel. Its cooling system is widely regarded as the most efficient in the segment for maintaining cabin comfort during 50°C summers.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 4.0L V6 typically averages around 13.0L/100km in mixed GCC driving, reflecting a balance of high-speed highway runs and heavy city traffic. Toyota's extensive service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman ensures that maintenance is affordable and convenient regardless of your location. The Prado maintains one of the lowest depreciation rates in the region, typically losing only 8-10% of its value annually, making it a safe financial asset.

Performance & Capability

The 4.0L V6 engine produces a robust 271 hp and 385 Nm of torque, paired with a permanent 4WD system and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Off-road, the low-range transfer case and center locking differential allow it to tackle technical dunes that would stop most crossovers. With a 220 mm ground clearance and a 3,000 kg braked towing capacity, it is as much a weekend workhorse as it is a daily commuter.

Comfort & Cabin

The seven-seat cabin is designed for family logistics, featuring a flexible third row and dedicated rear air conditioning vents to ensure all passengers stay cool. The GXR trim includes a 9-inch infotainment screen and a cooled center console box, which is an essential feature for keeping drinks cold during long desert drives. The cabin is well-insulated against road noise, providing a refined environment for long-distance travel across the GCC.

Safety

This Prado is equipped with 7 airbags and a suite of active safety systems including Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Active Traction Control (ATRC), and Hill-start Assist. The inclusion of Rear Parking Sensors and a back monitor makes navigating tight city parking in Dubai or Riyadh much easier for a vehicle of this size. The robust ladder-frame chassis provides an inherently strong safety cell for all occupants.

The bottom line

This Prado is the ideal match for a GCC family looking for a dependable 7-seater that holds its value; the V6 powertrain and GXR features make it a much better long-term buy than the base 4-cylinder models.
