Summary

This 2020 SUV represents a premium opportunity for those seeking a full-sized luxury experience with relatively low usage for its age. With only 66,000 km on the clock, this vehicle has been driven significantly less than the typical 20,000 to 25,000 km annual average seen across the GCC, ensuring plenty of mechanical longevity for the next owner. The black exterior is one of the most desirable colors in the UAE, consistently holding its value better than lighter or more experimental shades. It stands out in its segment by offering a genuine seven-seat layout that doesn't feel like a compromise, even for adults in the third row. For the GCC buyer, the mild-hybrid turbocharged powertrain provides the perfect balance of effortless highway cruising and city efficiency. This is a versatile, high-spec family hauler that offers a sophisticated alternative to more utilitarian full-size SUVs.

This Car vs Other 2020 GLS450s

At 66,000 km, this specific vehicle sits well below the expected mileage for a 2020 model in the GCC market, where long-distance commuting between cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi often pushes similar cars past the 100,000 km mark by now. The lower-than-average usage means significantly less wear on the suspension and interior components, which is a major advantage for a premium SUV. The black exterior remains the gold standard for resale in the region, ensuring it stays in high demand when you eventually decide to upgrade. While this is an American spec vehicle, it has been maintained to high standards and offers a competitive entry point into the luxury segment. The overall condition and mileage profile make it a standout choice compared to higher-mileage GCC equivalents that have faced harsher daily duties. It represents a sweet spot for buyers who prioritize lower mechanical wear over regional specification.

4MATIC vs Lower Trims

The 4MATIC trim levels up the driving experience significantly by providing sophisticated all-wheel-drive stability that lower-tier rear-wheel-drive variants lack, which is essential for maintaining grip during rare rainy spells or on sandy patches. This trim often includes the high-fidelity Burmester surround sound system as standard, a feature that GCC buyers highly value for long cross-country drives. You also benefit from the advanced MBUX infotainment system with dual 12.3-inch screens, offering a level of interior technology that feels generations ahead of more basic trims. The cabin is further elevated with multi-zone climate control that ensures every passenger, including those in the third row, stays perfectly cool in the peak of the Middle Eastern summer. Enhanced ambient lighting and premium upholstery options in this trim create an atmosphere that rivals the S-Class sedan. Furthermore, the inclusion of the 360-degree camera system makes navigating tight parking spots in Dubai Mall or Riyadh's busy streets much safer and easier than in base models.

GLS450 vs Segment Rivals

When compared to the BMW X7 or the Audi Q7, this model excels in providing a more usable third row and a more plush, comfort-oriented air suspension setup. Its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine features an integrated starter-generator that provides a smooth boost, outperforming several rivals in stop-go city traffic fluidity. While the Lexus LX and Toyota Land Cruiser offer more rugged off-road credentials, this Mercedes-Benz leads the segment in highway refinement and cabin noise isolation, making it the preferred choice for family road trips to Oman or Al Ain. The boot space, even with seats up, is more generous than many in its class, allowing for more groceries or weekend bags. Additionally, the sophisticated MBUX interface is widely considered more intuitive and visually impressive than the systems found in its American competitors like the Cadillac Escalade. The combination of German engineering and meaningful seven-seat utility makes it a more versatile daily driver for the modern GCC family.

Running Costs & Resale

The 3.0-liter engine is impressively efficient for a vehicle of this size, achieving roughly 10-12 liters per 100km on modern GCC highways, though city driving in heavy Riyadh or Dubai traffic will see these figures rise. It requires high-octane Super 98 fuel to maintain peak performance and engine health, which is readily available at all ADNOC and ENOC stations. Service intervals are typically every 15,000 km or once a year, with a strong network of specialized independent garages and authorized centers across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait ensuring parts are never hard to find. As an American spec car, it may depreciate slightly faster than a flagship GCC-spec equivalent, but the lower entry price often offsets this for the first few years of ownership. Historically, these models retain about 60-65% of their value after three years in the local market, especially when kept in popular colors like black. Maintenance is straightforward for any technician familiar with modern Mercedes architecture, and the availability of both OEM and high-quality aftermarket parts is excellent in the region.

Performance & Capability

Generating 375 horsepower from its refined inline-six engine, this SUV can sprint from 0-100 km/h in approximately 6.2 seconds, which is remarkably brisk for a seven-passenger vehicle. The 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system works seamlessly with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission to provide effortless overtaking power on high-speed motorways. Ground clearance is substantial enough to handle gravel tracks and light desert sand for weekend excursions, though its primary strength is the AIRMATIC air suspension that smoothens out road imperfections. The towing capacity is also class-leading, easily managing jet skis or small trailers for coastal trips. Driver modes allow you to stiffen the chassis for mountain roads in Jebel Hafeet or soften it for maximum passenger comfort during long trans-emirate hauls. The EQ Boost system provides an extra 250 Nm of torque momentarily, helping the car feel much lighter than its actual footprint. This makes it one of the most capable and composed large SUVs available for the diverse geography of the GCC.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior is a sanctuary from the harsh outdoor elements, featuring a high-capacity air conditioning system specifically designed to handle temperatures exceeding 45°C. With seven seats, the cabin is perfect for large families, including easy-entry features for the back row that kids and adults alike will appreciate. The use of high-quality materials throughout ensures that the cabin remains rattle-free and quiet even at 120 km/h on the highway. Ventilated front seats are a standout feature, providing vital cooling during the long summer months, while the panoramic sunroof adds a sense of airiness to the cabin during the cooler winter evenings. Noise-insulated glass helps block out the hum of city traffic, making the Burmester audio system sound even more crisp. Ample storage bins and USB-C ports throughout all three rows ensure that every family member's devices stay charged during long cross-border drives. It truly feels like a private lounge on wheels, designed to make every journey as stress-free as possible.

Safety

Safety is paramount in this trim, which comes equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies. Active Brake Assist and Blind Spot Monitoring are particularly useful on the UAE’s fast-moving, multi-lane highways, where rapid lane changes are common. The car also features Lane Keeping Assist and an advanced Pre-Safe system that prepares the cabin if a collision is detected, providing peace of mind for family transport. Adaptive cruise control makes the long, straight drives between GCC cities significantly less fatiguing by automatically maintaining distance from the car ahead. With eight airbags and a reinforced safety cell, it has earned top marks in global safety testing, making it one of the most secure environments for your children. The 360-degree camera system provides a bird's-eye view, ensuring you can see obstacles or pedestrians in tight urban environments or busy school drop-off zones.

The bottom line

This GLS450 is the ideal match for a growing family in the UAE looking for a low-mileage, high-prestige SUV that doesn't sacrifice comfort for utility. At 66,000 km, it offers many more years of premium service and represents a significantly better value proposition than buying new.
