Toyota Hilux GL

Highlights

• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• 900 kg estimated maximum payload
• 80-litre fuel tank

Summary

This 2020 Hilux GL is a quintessential GCC workhorse, combining a refined 2.7L petrol engine with the driver engagement of a manual transmission. With 92,000 km, it sits right at the expected average for a four-year-old vehicle in this region, proving its mechanical reliability without being over-worked. The white exterior isn't just a classic choice; it's the strongest resale color in the GCC, offering superior heat reflection and market demand. Compared to its diesel counterparts, this petrol variant offers a smoother, quieter drive for those who split their time between the worksite and the city. For a buyer in the Emirates or across the border, the sheer ubiquity of Toyota parts and service centers makes this a risk-free investment in durability.

This Car vs Other 2020 Hiluxes

At 92,000 km, this Hilux has covered roughly 23,000 km per year, which is perfectly in line with typical GCC highway use. Many commercial Hiluxes of this vintage often exceed 150,000 km, making this a well-balanced example for a private or light-duty owner. The white paint remains the gold standard for regional resale value and summer temperature management.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim offers a more passenger-friendly experience than the basic Workmate variants, featuring a more comfortable 6-seat cabin configuration and power windows. This mid-tier specification strikes the ideal balance between utility and daily comfort, adding vital features like a multi-information display and improved interior trim that higher-mileage base models lack.

Hilux vs Segment Rivals

While rivals like the Mitsubishi L200 or Nissan Navara offer competitive utility, the Hilux leads on residual value and service network density in every GCC country. Its 2.7L engine is specifically favored in the UAE for its balance of power and petrol-pump convenience compared to the more maintenance-intensive diesel engines found in some competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

Toyota's 2.7L petrol engine typically averages between 10.5L and 11.5L/100km in mixed GCC driving. Maintenance is exceptionally straightforward, with major service centers available from Abu Dhabi to Muscat. In the GCC used market, the Hilux retains value better than almost any other vehicle in its class, typically depreciating only 8-10% annually.

Performance & Capability

The 164 hp powertrain is designed for torque and longevity rather than raw speed, providing a reliable 245 Nm of torque for hauling. With a 217 mm ground clearance and a 900 kg estimated payload, it handles gravel tracks and heavy loads with ease. The 5-speed manual gearbox ensures the driver has total control, whether navigating stop-start city traffic or sandy worksites.

Comfort & Cabin

This Double Cab configuration features a rare 6-seat layout, providing extra utility for larger crews or families. The air conditioning system is a legendary Toyota unit, engineered specifically for 45°C+ temperatures to ensure rapid cabin cooling. Manual seat adjustments and durable upholstery are chosen for their ability to withstand the rigors of the GCC environment.

Safety

The 2020 Hilux carries a strong safety reputation, equipped with dual front airbags and an anti-lock braking system (ABS) as standard. It also features electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), which is particularly useful for maintaining stability when the rear bed is loaded. The body-on-frame construction provides a robust safety cell for all occupants.

The bottom line

For the buyer seeking a reliable, high-resale workhorse with a clean service outlook, this 2.7L Hilux is the most logical choice in the market today.
