Summary

This 2021 Toyota Hilux GL is a standout choice for buyers seeking the legendary durability of the Hilux nameplate with the convenience of an automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. With mileage that reflects typical GCC use, this petrol-powered workhorse has been kept in a high-demand black finish, which offers a sophisticated edge over the common white commercial units. As the 2021 facelift model, it benefits from the updated exterior styling and enhanced suspension tuning that notably improved ride quality over previous generations. For a buyer in the UAE or wider GCC, the primary advantage is the ease of long-term ownership; this model is supported by one of the most robust parts and service networks in the region. Whether used as a weekend desert explorer or a reliable daily business partner, it remains the segment benchmark for residual value and mechanical simplicity.

This Car vs Other 2021 Hiluxes

With approximately 63,000 km, this Hilux sits well within the average usage band for the GCC, where 20,000–25,000 km per year is common due to frequent inter-emirate travel. The black exterior is a premium choice that sets it apart from standard fleet vehicles, maintaining a strong resale profile in the secondary market. As a 2021 model, it features the significant mid-cycle refresh that improved cabin tech and structural refinement.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim offers a substantial step up from the base commercial-grade variants, providing a more livable cabin environment for dual-purpose users. It features an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with smartphone integration, which is a major convenience for daily navigation compared to the basic head units in entry trims. Additionally, this GL variant includes power-adjustable mirrors and upgraded interior fabrics that resist the wear of the GCC climate better than base fleet materials.

Hilux vs Segment Rivals

The Hilux leads its closest rivals, the Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi L200, in terms of sheer serviceability and authorized center density across the GCC. While the L200 is often seen as a pure utility tool, the Hilux GL balances ruggedness with a higher level of interior refinement and better-documented resale performance. Its 2.7L engine is widely considered the regional standard for reliability, requiring less specialized maintenance than the turbocharged diesel alternatives found in rivals.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.7L petrol engine averages between 10.5 and 11.5 L/100km in mixed GCC driving conditions. Service intervals are typically set at 10,000 km, and with one of the region's largest authorized networks, maintenance is both convenient and competitively priced. The Hilux remains a leader in value retention, typically depreciating only 8–10% annually, significantly outperforming European pickup alternatives in the local market.

Performance & Capability

The 2.7-liter powertrain delivers 164 hp and a verified braked towing capacity of 2,500 kg, making it highly capable for hauling recreational equipment or work loads. Its four-wheel-drive system features a selectable transfer case, providing the necessary traction for soft sand desert excursions and gravel tracks. The 2021 suspension updates include revised shock-absorber damping and new leaf-spring bushings, which deliver a more composed ride on UAE highways compared to earlier iterations.

Comfort & Cabin

The double-cab layout provides comfortable seating for five, with rear air vents standard to ensure cabin cooling remains effective during the extreme summer months. Cabin insulation has been improved in this generation to reduce road noise during high-speed highway cruising between cities. The 8-inch digital display is positioned for easy access, ensuring modern connectivity is always available alongside the rugged, wipe-clean surfaces designed for a long service life.

Safety

Safety is managed through a suite of standard features including dual front airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, and an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). For GCC driving, the inclusion of Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Hill-Start Assist (HAC) provides essential support on both highway lane changes and loose off-road surfaces. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is also standard, a critical feature for monitoring heat-related pressure changes during long desert drives.

The bottom line

Perfect for the owner who needs a bulletproof 4x4 pickup that holds its value, this GCC-spec Hilux GL offers the ideal balance of updated styling and proven mechanical reliability.
